We went to USC Legal Tech Startup Weekend, and this is what happened

spacer

Startup Weekends are always a fun time, filled with a ton of brilliantly geeky learning opportunities, and the USC Legal Tech Startup Weekend event was no different. The ideas that came to life in 54 hours were pretty awesome. Here’s a snapshot of what was built:

  1. LegalSync: an app/service that provides real-time tracking of legal couriers as they’re on their way to court.
  2. Probonopubli.co: An online service that matches nonprofits with lawyers and law firms who want to provide pro bono services.
  3. Ask the Pro: An online service for law students who can ask questions of law professors.
  4. Served.lawyer: An online service that gives intellectual property owners a simple way to track down websites that infringe on their content and automates the process of sending out cease and desist letters and take down notices.

There’s no better time than a snowy day to watch a lot of video.

At name.com we shoot a lot of video. Here’s what’s happened lately:

We went to GABF and asked this important question:

That same week we ended up in a taxi cab in NYC:

And then came home to Sparkly prattling about Potter:

But that was hardly as annoying as my attempt to show we don’t upsell:

Yet that was countered by Craig Walker from the Denver Post sharing tips on how you too can win a Pulitzer prize in photography:

And all the brilliance of name.com winning the Rigthside Hackathon…

We’re going to the USC Legal Tech Startup Weekend, come hang out!

spacer

We’re huge fans of Startup Weekend events because they give us a fantastic opportunity to give builders and entrepreneurs the tools they need to quickly get their next idea(s) online. We’ve recently been going to a handful of legal focused Startup Weekends because of the new .attorney and .lawyer domains names now being available, and these legal tech focused events have turned out to be particularly fun because a lot of the attendees are first time Startup Weekenders. This means that it’s their first time having the chance to learn just how it easy it is to start a company.

Startup Weekend events show you how easy it is to start a company because you’re able to see just how much you’re able to accomplish in just 54 hours...

How to Take Better Pictures | The Web Address Ep. 7

spacer

It’s all about the picture. It’s not that people don’t want to read (well, not always), it’s that people don’t have the time to read. Besides, what attracts you more: an intriguing photo or a huge clump of words? Right. That’s why I’ll keep this description to a minimum.

This week’s Web Address features Craig Walker, two-time Pulitzer Prize photographer from the Denver Post. He’s shared stories from around the world with pictures that have truly touched the lives of millions. He joins us to help you get a better photo.

The November promo code wears its mustache proudly

spacer

We’re big fans of Movember here at Name.com, and we’ll be having another Movember contest within our office. This year we’re keeping track of our progress at www.stache.ninja, which—not coincidentally at all!—is the inspiration for our November promo code. Use STACHENINJA through Nov. 30 for $10.25 registrations and renewals on .COM and .NET domains. The code is also good for 20% off new .NINJA registrations.

What else can you save on this month?

Glad you asked! There’s no promo code required for these sales (new registrations only):

  • .REVIEWS for $8.99
  • .SOCIAL for $11.99
  • .ROCKS for $6.99 when bundled with any other registration

Got it? Now go shave your face let out your inner Ron Swanson or Magnum P.I. And register a few domains.

If you’ve got an idea for a new website, there’s no time like the present. Start a search, lock down the domain you’ve got in mind, and start building. And here’s a little extra incentive to help you get started: From now through Nov. 4, you can use the promo code GOFISH at checkout and the registrations (and renewal!) price for .COM and .NET domains will be just $9.25.

Beer Friday Presents: Women Brewers, Beer Domains and People Making Out

spacer

When you’re approached by a fantastic group of women who want you to share in their love of craft beer, you make the most of the opportunity. What we didn’t realize is how much fun Colorado’s Barley’s Angels would be. After some beverages we hatched (brewed?) a plan to infiltrate the Great American Beer Festival spacer at the Denver Convention Center. To say that the GABF is big is an understatement. This year it hosted over 49,000 people and offered nearly 4000 beers. How would we break through the teeming masses and get the word out about Colorado’s premiere group of femme ferments and our brand new .BEER domain name?

We’d listen. That’s right, a trick not completely unknown but is on the verge of extinction.

Our first question was pretty basic.

It was...

New Yorkers on New York City and .NYC

spacer

We dare you to watch this and not like New Yorkers. Go ahead. Who doesn’t need a heartwarming three minutes of Sinatra-inspired humanity?

Yes, there was some concern about stuffing a naive guy from Colorado in a cab in Queens and have him ambush people with a camera. From his boss’s boss it was relayed that he “just might get himself killed.” Well, there wasn’t any death. Only love. Love for New York City and for the opportunity to get their very own .NYC domain name. Here’s what we got from the video above: New Yorkers are fond of their city and .NYC is the 212 of New Domains.

A new way to get discovered with Yelp and TripAdvisor

spacer

The brand new domain name .REVIEWS is here, and it’s making it easier than ever for people to discover the Yelp or TripAdvisor reviews that are posted about your business.

We’ll use a restaurant across the street from the Name.com office, Cherry Cricket, as an example. Below are the current URLs to find reviews for Cherry Cricket:

Yelp: www.yelp.com/biz/cherry-cricket-denver

TripAdvisor: www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g33388-d379407-Reviews-Cherry_Cricket-Denver_Colorado.html

Those are pretty long URLs! Instead of having those long URLs, Cherry Cricket could hop onto Name.com and snag the domain name CherryCricket.reviews, and then use URL forwarding to redirect the domain to either their Yelp reviews page or TripAdvisor reviews page.

Or, Cherry Cricket could ...

We went to the Legal Tech Startup Weekend in Seattle, and it was awesome

spacer

We had a great time at the Legal Tech Startup Weekend last weekend… list a seriously good time! It’s always fun to buckle down for 54 hours and turn an idea into a company. The Seattle Startup Weekend that we went to this past weekend was focused on legal related products, which brought some of the following ideas to life:
