Learn about the Competition in the United States and Canada

In its first United States and Canada competition in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation appointed fifteen fellows from a field of seventy-four applicants.  The United States and Canada Fellowship class of 2008 numbers 191, chosen from over 2,600 applicants.  In the eighty-three years since their establishment, Guggenheim Fellowships have grown not only in number but in prestige, becoming one of the most sought-after and highly valued of all Fellowship awards.

Learn about the Competition in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Guggenheim Family developed a deep respect for and interest in the people of Central and South America as a result of their business dealings there.  Eager to advance goodwill and understanding between the United States and its southern neighbors, Senator Simon Guggenheim established a second endowment to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1929 to fund Fellowships first to citizens of Mexico and a limited number of South American countries, and eventually to all citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean.
