Learn about the Competition in Latin America and the CaribbeanThe Guggenheim Family developed a deep respect for and interest in the people of Central and South America as a result of their business dealings there. Eager to advance goodwill and understanding between the United States and its southern neighbors, Senator Simon Guggenheim established a second endowment to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1929 to fund Fellowships first to citizens of Mexico and a limited number of South American countries, and eventually to all citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean.
