Resolving the Food Crisis: Assessing Global Policy Reforms Since 2007
GDAE researcher Timothy A. Wise, and Sophia Murphy, Senior Advisor at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, have released a new report, Resolving the Food Crisis: Assessing Global Policy Reforms Since 2007.
The report examines how the international community has responded the food price spikes in 2007-8 and more recently in 2011. The authors find that while the most recent crisis has been a catalyst for important policy reforms, governments still have yet to address the underlying causes of the food crisis. They call for governments and the international community to reduce financial speculation in commodities markets, limit further expansion of crops and land dedicated to bio-fuels, and halt "land grabs." The Myth of Financial Protectionism
GDAE Senior Researcher Kevin P. Gallagher has a new working paper from the Political Economy Research Institute, The Myth of Financial Protectionism: The New (and Old) Economics of Capital Controls. The report addresses the claims often made by economists and leading politicians that the use of capital controls amounts to "financial protectionism." Gallagher argues that these claims are unfounded, and that capital controls should be seen as tools that promote stability and growth in developing countries. INESC is a non-profit research and advocacy organization covering a wide variety of topics, including fiscal and budget policy, human rights, international policy, food sovereignty, socio-environmental rights, and land reform.

Responses to GDAE's Report on the Marlin Mine in Guatemala
In September 2011, GDAE Researchers Lyuba Zarsky and Leonardo Stanley released a report, Searching for Gold in the Highlands of Guatemala: Economic Benefits and Environmental Risks of the Marlin Mine. The report found that, overall, the environmental risks posed by the Marlin Mine (owned and operated by the Canadian company Goldcorp) on the local communities far outweighed the economic benefits. The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre has featured the report on their website, and invited Goldcorp to respond. The authors issued rejoinders to Goldcorp, and you can read all official responses here. Kevin P. Gallagher’s work on China’s investment in Latin America has been featured in the media, and he was quoted in El Pais, ¿Beneficia China o Latinoamérica?, and AlJazeera, “The Dragon goes shopping in South America.” On Monday, January 9 Gallagher delivered a talk at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government titled "China's rising wages and appreciating currency: blessing or curse for Mexico?" Stay tuned for a new publication on China and Latin America, “A Better Deal? A Comparative Analysis of Chinese Loans in Latin America.”
Timothy A. Wise presented his report, "Resolving the Food Crisis: Assessing Global Policy Reforms Since 2007," at the 10th anniversary conference of the International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs) in Muttukadu, Chennai, January 24-26, 2012. The three-day conference is focused on: ''Global Economy in a Time of Uncertainty: Capitalist trajectories and progressive alternatives.'' It will be followed by a two-day seminar January 28-9 in Delhi, titled ''Whither Global Capitalism?'' and held at the Convention Center, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Timothy A. Wise’s work on reforming US trade policies and the Lessons from NAFTA was heavily quoted in the January edition of The Nation: How US Policies Fueled Mexico's Great Migration.
