Airbus A380

I read a really interesting article in the Sawubona magazine (the free mag on SAA flights) about the technical route-proving tour the A380 has to do for type certification. The mini-world tour started in Toulouse, France to Joburg, then over the South Pole to Sydney. From Sydney it travelled to Vancouver and back to Toulouse, this time flying over the North Pole.

The flight wasn’t empty. It had 7 crew members as well as a full boarding of 80kg dummies so as to simulate a full load of passengers. These dummies also generate body heat so as to test the cabin temperature.

Some interesting facts about the A380:

  • Any airport that can accommodate a Boeing 747, can accommodate the A380.
  • The A380 can carry up to 853 passengers!
  • The A380 has 50% more space and 35% more seats than a 747.
  • The A380 is the most environmentally friendly airliner ever built, burning just 2.9 litres of fuel per 100km for every passenger. (Thats 24 litres per km if the plane is fully loaded!)
  • The maximum takeoff weight of the A380 is 560 tons.
  • The A380 can fly for about 20 hours on a full tank of fuel.
  • An A380 costs around $300 million (US dollars). Airbus have so far sold 166 to 16 different airlines.

This really is one amazing aircraft. There is more info on the A380 over at Wikipedia
