Sure We Can is a non-profit organization founded to create and support the operation of redeemable-container (cans and plastic bottles) collection centers geared to the needs of New York City’s homeless and disenfranchised recyclables collectors.
Our goal is to remove the unnecessary hardships faced by those wishing to participate in the collection and redemption of containers, while sponsoring and coordinating the development of a mutually beneficial system(s) with the City of New York and local environmental organizations to make recycling a way of life.
By law in New York State, individuals may redeem various types of qualifying empty beverage containers for $0.05 each. This affords an opportunity for the City’s homeless and unemployed population to earn an income that would otherwise be unachievable. Additionally, the collection and redemption of discarded aluminum, plastic and glass containers saves valuable landfill space and decreases waste in New York City.
Those who have undertaken this occupation as a means to earn a living in Manhattan (where there is such a high percentage of recyclables thrown away as ‘trash’) face great difficulty, both during the collection and redemption processes. Some of the reasons for this include the following:
The initial means by which Sure We Can hopes to achieve its goal is through sponsorship and establishment of user-friendly bulk redemption centers in various parts of the New York City. Prototype redemption facilities have already been established with the goal to be expanded to other neighborhoods, allowing container redemption to evolve into a honorable line of work citywide. The objective of these facilities will be to offer the following services to those making the effort to collect discarded recyclables and provide them with a stable means of income:
Sure We Can was established as a non-profit corporation in 2007 by a group of people who came from all walks of life but share the same concerns for both humanity, compassion and the environment .The founders include a Catholic Sister who chose to join the homeless on the streets of Manhattan, a leader of a group of homeless who have earned their living for the past twenty years through recycling and other concerned city residents.
