Random verification locked me out of my account

Paypal has tried to “randomly” verify personal securities against my account using the debit account of the bank account that I closed many years ago. I entered the right number but they could not verify because the bank account had been closed. Now I am stuck because they could not do anything else to resolve it. I asked them to close the account then they said they could not close it until I give them the right debit account number. I called customer service and even the system asked me to enter the debit number for them to identify who I was. The rep asked me a bunch of security questions and most of which were bogus and old that I was not even sure of the answers. How on earth a well-known financial institution such as Paypal should use old information to verify a live person? Would it be smarter to use SSN or something that is fixed other than the ever-changing bank account information? Now I can’t close the account and they can’t either and they’ve asked me to create another account with them using a different email. Screw them. What? so that I will run into the same problem again if I change my bank again? They are now upholding my personal information against my will.
