I was born in Marshalltown, Iowa. I moved with my family to Santa Barbara in the early ‘50s to experience my first look at the Pacific Ocean. Our family attended the local First Baptist Church, where I suffered through the minister’s 20 minute sermons. I had no idea what he was talking about and his sermons seemed like an eternity. (What do you expect from unregenerate kid?) A couple of years later, we moved to Ventura and the long sermons continued in another Baptist church, until I could take it no longer. I broke away from my family to enjoy a life of surfing, rather than “suffering”. However, the Lord had another plan for my life.

Backseat in an F-105

Unable to stay out of the draft during the Vietnam War, I made a “wise” choice to join the Air Force to stay out of South East Asia. In 1967, I found myself in the back seat of an F-105, flying over North Vietnam. This was a far cry from surfing everyday at California Street in Ventura. This flight and other related events opened my eyes to the certainty of death. I remember saying to a Christian friend, after both of us had received life threatening flight orders, “We could go up there and get shot down and our lives would be over with”. He responded with, “I know, but I am ready to die”. His response shocked me. After six months of discussing the issues of life with him, I Lynn Cory, on February 11, 1968, 10:00 at night, on a baseball diamond in Thailand simply invited Jesus into my heart. At 23 years of age I finally understood what those preachers were talking about.

The following year I received a call from God to go into the ministry and I went on to Bible school. I graduated from Biola University and Talbot Seminary. During my years at Biola and Talbot I was the college pastor at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley. Those were wonderful years of fruitful ministry. Some even called the time a “revival”. I agree, they were most amazing.

Ready for Church

The love of my life is my dear wife, Jo. We have been married over 37 years and we have three wonderful sons; David, Paul and Adam. Our oldest son David is married to our sweet daughter-in-law Jennifer and they have a little one on the way, which will finally make me a “grandpa”. I can’t wait!

Surfing California St. in the 60’s

Well, I still surf occasionally, love Hawaii and play a mean game of racquetball, but my heart is for God’s Kingdom. I have been the Associate Pastor at the Valley Vineyard since 1987 and I have truly enjoyed these years of service. I have a deep love and respect for my dear friends at the Vineyard and look forward to serving alongside of them as long as the Lord allows.
