Cute kitchenware

February 19, 2008 at 7:54 am

I have a headache that will not go away. (I did my taxes two weeks ago, so it’s not related to that.) I have a number of theories, including: too much caffeine, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) due to no sunlight at my workplace, or residual effects of all that chocolate I ate over the weekend. I’m cutting back on the caffeine and avoiding chocolate, but if it doesn’t go away today, I’ll probably see my doctor about it. Either way I don’t feel much like blogging when my head feels like it’s imploding.

I did make it to Target this weekend, though. Have you seen the super cute Boston Warehouse kitchen gadgets they stock? They have a cheese grater shaped like a mouse, an ice cream scoop that looks like a whale, and scissors that look like a woodpecker. I wanted to buy the whole rack of items even though I don’t eat pizza much anymore and have no need for a piranha-shaped pizza cutter. They didn’t have any cute grapefruit spoons though, so I had to buy normal-looking ones and will have to use my imagination to believe I’m digging for buried treasure when I’m chomping on a pumelo.

Hope your head feels better soon and its not the beginnings of the cold/flu/virus thing that has had everyone I know from the midwest to the east coast sick lately!

I love that line of gadgets. I have the peeler shaped like a bird. I especially like how the point of the beak is designed to peck the eyes of potatoes out!

Just a thought- when I drink too much caffeine, it has a dehydrating effect. That always gives me headaches (whether I’m dehydrated due to alcohol or caffeine.) Hope you feel better soon- and drink some water!

So sad your headache won’t go away, there is nothing worse, you can hardly think! I hope you feel better soon!

I agree with Natalie’s comment. Once my husband and I did a 30 mile bike ride, and after finishing, we stopped for some Diet Coke. We didn’t drink the bottle sized Diet Coke, though, we shared the “Bucket o’Coke,” which is large enough to bathe a small child. That in addition to the long bike ride made me so dehydrated, I had a headache for 3 days (the kind where you walk and it hurts, you turn your head and it hurts) I just had to take Ibuprofen and drink tons of water until it went away.

As someone who’s been avidly trying to unclutter my house recently, it is my sole purpose in life to keep that web page away from my girlfriend.

Headaches and migraines can also be caused by too much artificial sweetener. I developed migraines 4 or 5 years ago by chewing too much of a certain brand of gum, as I can’t stand artificial sweeteners any other way. I stopped the gum, and I’ve hardly ever had a migraine since. I won’t mention the brand as it was partly my fault for chewing so much gum.

Funny you mention the taxes. I did mine yesterday, and I have a headache that won’t go away and it IS the taxes. Ugh.

Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Actually, I knew a neurologist that always insisted that the best cure for a headache was a cup of coffee and a piece of dark chocolate.

I was more than happy to take his advice :-D

Well, I think I may have overdosed on said medical advice, hence my own current weight loss journey…

I hope you feel better, headaches are yucky.

My mom got that bird peeler for christmas and man, did I want to steal it. Now I know where I can get one of my own though, thank you!

Agree with the hydration advice.

Also, SAD makes you sad, it doesn’t give you a headache. The cure? Either sun, or tanning booths, or loads of Vitamin D3 until the sun comes back – or all three.

I am so addicted to useless but cute kitchen gadgets. My favorite are those ice cube makers that freeze your ice cubes into little shapes like hearts, stars, snowmen, and penguins. Amazing! Competely unnecessary, but amazing!

My miracle cure for migraines is tons of water, a very long hot shower, and SLEEP. Oh, and a massage if I can get it, but those are hard to come by. :-P

Hope you are feeling better. Maybe you need glasses? I thought I had a brain tumor and it turned out I was far-sited hehe. This is my first time commenting on your blog but I have really enjoyed reading it, thank you so much for sharing (especially the bit with the Target products today, ADORABLE!)

OMG, thanks for the kitchen gadget link! They are too cute…I want them all, NOW! Of course, I need none of them at all. Sigh, that’s capitalism for you!

Sorry to hear about your bad head. If not the advent of the flu, perhaps it is caused by your new discovery of coffee? I’ve heard that some people are allergic, not to the caffeine, but to some other compound found in coffee, and headache is one of the symptoms. Just a thought.

There’s just something a bit unsettling about an ice cream scoop shaped like a whale.

It’s like, “Yummo, I’m gonna have some ice cre—oh my god, Shamu! Must. Resist.”

Artificial sweetners!! I’ve actually ended up in the hospital with migraines and when the doc gave me a sample of migraine medicine there was a list of possible triggers on there and artificial sweetners were right at the top of the list.

Splenda is ok….the rest….forget about ‘em!! Personally…I don’t think anything tastes good enough for me to eat or drink and suffer a migraine as the consequence :)

I have a new kitchen gadget – a food scale. You can put food codes in it and know the number of calories, carbs, etc. in the very apple you are about to eat, pretty amazing. I like it. I think it will help with portioning, developing recipes, reality checks, etc. I have put in a spot where I can easily see and access it.

I’m with Conrad GoGo on the whale ice cream scoop…. there’s something very wrong about that. LOL! And a beaver whisk? Can you imagine putting that on a “wish list”?

It is true – caffeine cuts both ways with headaches. Too much can give you one by dehydrating you, but if you have one already, a small coffee may help. Some headache tablets have caffeine in them, even – it increases the painkilling effect of paracetamol.

I kind of hesitate to say this on here, but headaches can also be caused by a dip in blood sugar, so a little carby snack can help.

ohhhhhhh, I’ve had those the past week or two! Not fun… my saviour has been Advil Liquid-gels. Though, I did go see a doc too (which is what he suggested)… get ‘er looked at, doesn’t hurt…
