I started taking Cecilie’s course and after only a couple of weeks I realised that my enormous fear of actually talking to someone in Cantonese outside a classroom was gradually diminishing. Today, after only a few months of weekly lessons, I realise to my enormous surprise that I am actually able to talk to taxi drivers and order things in restaurants. As Cecilie likes to tell her students, the first step to world domination is to actually try to talk to someone in Chinese.
Cecilie’s Cantonese class is great! Most of all, she helps me have the confidence I need to realise that if I put forth the effort, learning Cantonese is an attainable goal. Being a Westerner, she understands where I am coming from as I learn Cantonese, so she’s able to teach in a way that I, as a Westerner, understand. And she teaches the actual real life Cantonese that people here speak (unlike other programs I have used). I love having a weekly class that keeps me from putting down my studies for too long, and I love the regular reminder that I need to be practicing my Cantonese with locals on a daily basis. Cecilie’s sense of humour makes class fun. I highly recommend her class! And her films are hilarious and great for learning Cantonese in an interesting way.
I would like to thank you for the few months of lessons. They were really good. I can’t even compare the way you teach to anything else I tried before. I learnt more in the first hour than I did in a full 10 week course, I had previously done. My only regret is that I didn’t find out about you when I first moved to HK 2 years ago.
I have learned a few languages in my time, but Cecilie was undoubtedly the best language teacher I’ve ever had.
Each week Cecilie patiently taught our group of 3 how to speak ’real’ Cantonese – the language that’s spoken on the streets, in the markets and in the workplace every day.
After a few weeks I was comfortable speaking to waiters, taxi drivers and shop keepers and after a few months I felt a lot more integrated into Hong Kong life.
Cecilie has a unique perspective among Cantonese teachers, having learned the language herself. She is able to point out the parts of Cantonese which are more difficult for European language speakers, and help you surmount them.
I fully recommend Cecilie’s lessons for anyone who wants an entree into the language, the city and the culture of Hong Kong.
Cecilie has an unmatched passion for Cantonese.
Her lessons create a fun, exciting, and engaging environment that pulls you deeper into the language!
”Having recently had the chance to see Cecilie’s videos and get some lessons it has helped my Cantonese a lot. She makes learning Cantonese a fun experience and without difficult monotonous tasks. You feel she has a real passion for the language and she passes that on to her students.”
