Skills of a juggler are necessary
Although a planner is often an unsung hero of a wedding, the perfect occasion is impossible without her moving things forward. From the right music at the banquet to which gown to choose, the planner can extend a helping hand to the new Mr and Mrs.
"A wedding planner is like a co-ordinator, an adviser, a psychologist, a risk manager and a timekeeper," says Christine Li, wedding planner at GP Harmonie in Hong Kong. "Anything can happen at a wedding. Therefore, a wedding planner's role is to multitask. The most basic requirement is to make sure the wedding runs smoothly, according to the rundown."
Li says it is a wedding planner's responsibility to co-ordinate different parties to ensure the best results for the wedding. "The most important thing is to make sure the couple enjoy their wedding without anything to worry about, and they just need to receive the warmest greetings from the guests," she says.
Preparation work includes giving the couple advice on selecting the make-up artist, videographer and photographer, tailor-making the wedding-day rundown and arranging transport. On the big day, her job involves tasks such as arranging the tea-serving ceremony in the morning and accompanying guests to their seats at the wedding banquet.
Li says time management poses a common challenge for a wedding planner as there is a lot of juggling to do on the day.
"A wedding planner must be very systematic and calm to face these challenges. Also, there are many situations that can catch you off guard. Problem-solving skills are essential for a professional wedding planner," says Li, who advises aspiring wedding planners to participate in the weddings of their friends and relatives as much as possible to gain a deeper understanding of the flow of the big day.
