Print Resources

Always a work in progress, this page will be for print resources.  If I can find them for you to read online as well, I will also post those links.  I will update as I can, but expect the suggestions to be few at first….not because of a lack of good print resources, but rather an excess of me doing other things!  I’m starting with some of the books I have on my shelves.

I Dream of Yesterday and Tomorrow: A Celebration of the James Bay Crees

Topics: eastern James Bay Cree of Eeyou Istchee, Quebec Succession and the Cree, James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), La Paix des Braves.

Online (PDF): introduction,  part I, part II

Why you should read it: Most Canadians have never heard the story of how a bunch of young Cree went up against politicians and industry…and won.

Most Canadians are completely unaware of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, or the fact that it almost didn’t happen.  Cree lands were going to be flooded during the construction of a massive hydro-electric project back in the 1970s, without nary a word to the Cree about it.  This is a series of battles that needs to become a part of the Canadian consciousness.

This book gives a good and accessible account of what the James Bay Cree had to do in order to be heard, as well as what challenges there have been in implementing the JBNQA and the Paix des Braves.
