Do you want to take a stand against poorly written ballot initiatives? Against ballot initiatives that are written to financially benefit their sponsors? Against ballot initiatives that are billed as noble but are anything but?
Then vote no Nov. 6 on Proposition 37.
The measure would require labeling on some types of genetically modified food, but not others, and without a good explanation as to why. The primary intent seems to be to stigmatize certain foods, to the potential benefit of a financial sponsor of the initiative, an organic-foods tycoon. Proposition 37 also allows for shakedown lawsuits of small retailers who allegedly aren’t complying with labeling requirements, explaining its strong support from some trial lawyers.
We think it is a legitimate question as to whether genetically modified foods should be labeled, and we hope the federal government looks at the issue. Congressional hearings may be in order. But we don’t think California should lead the way on the labeling front with such a poorly crafted, dubiously motivated state law.
