Alumnus adds unrestricted endowment gift to annual scholarships
Alex Gregory, ’78 and ’79, just keeps on giving.
An annual scholarship donor for the past nine years, Gregory Alex Gregory’s previous donations have provided scholarships for deserving students like Katherine Smith and now he has added a gift to the unrestricted endowment to support the university’s priorities.has added an unrestricted endowment donation to the Georgia College Foundation as part of its “Pillars for the Future: Campaign to Sustain Excellence.”
The unrestricted gift to Georgia College provides funds for university priorities, Gregory said. “It’s important for the university to have some flexibility as new opportunities emerge, and unrestricted funds can provide that. And, as an endowment, it helps the university in perpetuity.”
Gregory is the perfect model for alumni. He has served on the Georgia College Foundation Board of Trustees for 20 years, including two terms as chairman. As President and Chairman of the Board for YKK Corporation of America, a major manufacturer of fasteners and commercial/residential architectural products, he also participates in the university’s GEM mentorship program every year, providing valuable experience and guidance to students.
“I get so excited — Georgia College is such a success story,” Gregory said, “and I hope more alumni will take pride in the university’s achievements, get involved in its programs and provide support, especially during these economic times when state funding has declined so much and the university has so many excellent programs that could benefit.”
A native of Eatonton, Gregory earned an engineering degree at Georgia Tech before completing his MBA and MSA at Georgia College. His career success resulted in his receiving the 2001 Georgia College Alumni Achievement Award and 2002 Executive of the Year Award. Last year, he was inducted honoris causa into the Georgia College Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society.
In addition to his support for Georgia College, Gregory has been active with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Carter Center Board of Councilors, the Japan-America Society of Georgia, JapanFest and the State Workforce Investment Board.
Gregory and his wife, Glenda, have two grown children and three grandchildren.
