Global Pathways Certificate Themes

Choose a Global Pathways Certificate Theme that will tie together your coursework, experiences, and activities into an emphasis area. 

Area and Regional Studies:

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Area Studies theme will explore the language, history, culture, and contemporary political and economic setting of a particular country or cultural region. Typical majors and exemplary courses.

Cultural Expression and Performance

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Cultural Expression and Performance theme will explore the wealth of visual art, theatre, dance, film, literature and music expressions within global cultures. At least 3 modes of the previously listed expressions/performances or 1 mode across 3 cultures need to be explored. Typical majors and exemplary courses

Environmental Sustainability

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Environment theme will explore how environmentally sustainable solutions are developed and/or how human activity simultaneously impacts, and is impacted by, the global environment. In support of the global orientation of this initiative, particular emphasis should be placed on the study of environmental issues that extend beyond North America. Students pursuing this theme also have the option of completing a one-semester minimum research project that addresses a contemporary global environmental issue for the International or Intercultural Experience. These students will also achieve the additional learning outcome of being able to communicate scientific/technical/socioeconomic issues that transcend their own culture. Topics for environmental research projects must be approved by the Environmental Sub-Committee. Typical majors and exemplary courses.

Global Hunger

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Global Hunger theme will explore how eradicating hunger and poverty is integral to achieving sustainable human development and is dependent upon establishing ecologically and socially responsible solutions to world challenges, including consumption of resources, disaster relief and development of the built environment. Students can choose from a broad range of interdisciplinary course offerings that include meteorology, urban and regional planning, economics, geography, sociology, public health, nursing, food and nutrition science, civil and environmental engineering and international affairs. Global Issues

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Global Issues theme will explore their unique interests that prepare them to be a global citizen across national borders and regions. Their activities and courses will be tailored to their own interests and goals in becoming interculturally and globally competent. The Global Issues theme is designed for a more eclectic course selection and is suitable for most majors.

Human Rights

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Human Rights Theme have the opportunity to explore how the "Human Rights Revolution" has changed the worldview of countries and governments. Students can choose from a broad range of interdisciplinary course offerings that include human rights studies in law, criminology, history, film, literature, humanities, political science, religious studies, and modern languages. International Business

Through a course of study that includes required and individually selected courses, students in the International Business Theme have the opportunity to explore issues faced in the international marketplace. Students complement their business major with global and cultural awareness that will be beneficial for entry-level positions in multinational corporations and domestic based import/export businesses. You must be a degree-seeking undergraduate Business major at Florida State University in good standing to participate in this theme. Specific requirements for the International Business Theme.

International Development

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the International Development theme will explore the activities designed to carry out a nation’s or region’s development goals, to introduce change in societies or communities, to increase productive or organizational capacity, and improve the quality of people’s lives. Typical majors and exemplary courses.

Professional and Human Services

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Professional and Human Services theme will explore individual actions to increase organizational, health and education services to improve the quality of people’s lives in a global setting. Typical majors and exemplary courses.

Religion

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Religion theme will explore the complexity of religious beliefs as a means to understand contemporary global social movements. At least 3 religions need to be explored across a contemporary cultural group. Typical majors and exemplary courses.

Women's Studies

Through an individually designed course of study, students in the Women’s Studies theme will explore the cultural construction of gender in the global community. Lives of women throughout the world will be examined in terms of history, culture and nationality and their intersections with gender. Typical majors and exemplary courses.
