What is the All Stars Talent Show Network?

The All Stars Talent Show Network (ASTSN) involves inner-city youth, ages 5 to 25, in creating developmental culture through producing and performing in weekend talent shows in their neighborhood school auditoriums.

Where is the All Stars Talent Show Network?
The ASTSN is active throughout the five boroughs of New York City, in Newark, NJ, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX and in the Bay Area in California. The All Stars Talent Show Network is also produced by local organizations in Atlanta, and internationally in Uganda, Africa.

Is this like "Star Search?"

As its name implies, the All Stars relates to all young people as "stars." The program was designed to reach the vast majority of "ordinary" kids from the poorest neighborhoods -- the young people who typically don't make it into "special" programs.

How do Kids Get Involved?
Youth and adult volunteers distribute flyers, speak at community centers and schools and set up tables on street corners in the neighborhoods where the performance is to take place. Auditions are usually held in the auditorium of a local high school. Every young person who auditions makes it.

What goes on at an All Stars event?
All Stars Talent Shows are designed to give every young person who wants one an opportunity to perform on stage and to learn a host of skills required to produce a live performance.

Stage performances typically range from dance, synchronized step, singing (R&B or rap), skits, instrumentals--in groups or as solo performers. Every young person who auditions makes it. No one is turned away. The young people--with the support of staff and trained volunteers--manage all aspects of the event including the lights, sound, security, ticket sales, outreach and publicity. The events take place in the community, often at local high schools, giving the young people a chance to perform before family, friends and neighbors.

All Stars Talent Show Events

Back To School

An entertainment program you never expected - at a place you never thought you'd be!

Back to School takes donors and supporters of the All Stars to an exciting, live All Stars Talent Show Network performance put together by young producers, dancers, singers, rappers and steppers from New York's inner-city communities. On select Saturdays during the year, supporters can experience the energy of Hip-Hop and the creativity of New York City's young people in the developmental environment of the All Stars Talent Show Network. When supporters go Back to School to see an All Stars audition, workshop or show, they'll also see the city and its young people in a whole new way!

On the day of the event, guests arrive at noon at the All Stars Project's 42nd Street center, 543 West 42nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) where they are greeted by one of Back to School's teenage hosts.

Then the Back to School audience members board a chartered bus for Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, Jamaica or the Bronx. Whatever the destination, guests are sure to have an unforgettable New York cultural experience!

Phat Friends Awards
The Phyllis Hyman Phat Friend Awards, named after the All Stars Project's first celebrity spokesperson, are presented annually by All Stars youth to their community heroes - adults - who demonstrate their support for kids and youth concerns. Over many months, young people taking part in All Stars Project youth events, nominate deserving adults. An All Stars youth committee interviews the nominees and the awardees are chosen from those nominees. It is the only such award in New York - given to adults by young people.
