Ideas Take Flight

Ever had an idea that you thought could turn into a cool business, but wondered how?  Looking at other successful start-ups, have you ever  wondered "How do they do it?"  The fact is that most successful entrepreneurs have, at some point or other, had a helping hand. With CUE's annual Ideas Take Flight competition, we can help turn your idea into commercial reality. The competition is open to entrants in three areas: Science and Technology, Social Enterprise and Software (click here for full rules and conditions). Although each area is run in three phases, you can enter any one or more at any stage before the respective closing date:

£100 for 100 words

"Write 100 words and convince our judges that your idea has legs"

Your entry can be in any of the three areas described above. Simply write 100 words describing your idea and enter for a chance to win one of twenty £100 prizes. At this stage the requirements are the same for each area.

Entering at this early stage will give you ample time to discuss your ideas and to access training and mentoring opportunities offered by CUE.

Submission form: deadline has passed.

£1k competition

"Write a 1500 word executive summary to show your idea has wings"

Write a 1500 word executive summary of your idea for a chance to win one of ten £1k prizes before the final stage of the competition. At this stage the requirements are the same for all areas.

If you do not win this or the previous phase, you still can enter the final phase of the competition.

Submission form: deadline has passed.

£5k competition

"Convince judges and investors that your idea can fly!"

In the case of Science and Technology or Social Enterprise you will be required to produce a 3500 word business plan. In the case of Software you will need to present slides, a demonstration video and a 2000 word business plan.

If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to pitch your idea to a panel of investors and business angels for a chance to win one of the £5k prizes, the angel prize as well as potential investment in your business.

Submission form: submit your business plan here before midnight, April 10th 2015.

  • Through my academic path I have enriched my knowledge in multidisciplinary areas including nonlinear dynamical systems modelling, bioengineering, machine learning and software design. The essence of my intellectual and professional life is creative and critical thinking for problem solving. During my PhD in Information Engineering division in the Department of Engineering, I developed a novel design framework based on nonlinear dynamical system theory. I have always been fascinated by entrepreneurship, which directed me to develop a new algorithm for brain signal (EEG) processing and raised fund for designing a medical device to monitor depth of anesthesia during surgery before starting my PhD. I am cofounder of a company providing technical consultancy for full product life cycle based on embedded systems design. I am also interested in painting and my artworks were exhibited at the Queens College Art festival (2013), and in two group exhibitions and a gallery in London (2013; 2014).

  • I am a PhD student at University of Cambridge, studying Biochemistry. My PhD project focuses on characterising the resistant mechanism to glycopeptide antibiotics. Before starting my PhD, I did a Molecular Plant and Biotechnology MRes degree in Imperial College London. Apart from research, I put a lot of energy trying to link between academia and industry. I’ve been always interested in entrepreneurship. I am really looking forward to work for CUE this year.

  • Alex is a Ph.D. student at the University of Cambridge. He conducts his research at the Institute for Manufacturing, exploring emerging business models in the manufacturing domain and studying the impact they will have on companies’ supply networks and operations in the future. Before coming to Cambridge, Alex obtained an M.Eng. degree in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Warwick, during which time he also first became interested in entrepreneurship. Having participated in numerous consulting and start-up workshops in the past few years and becoming an active member of CUE, he also recently co-founded an apparel design company, ZENDALA, and now runs its operations and finance activities.

  • I am currently doing my 2nd year of undergraduate studies, Engineering, at Cambridge. I have always been fascinated by entrepreneurial ideas and start-ups, ideas which lead to big changes and innovations in the world. I believe there is no age-restriction for being an entrepreneur and the key is to realize an opportunity when it is presented to you and decide to take it. So I suggested the role of undergraduate relations director for CUE to create channels of connection between undergraduate students and the world of entrepreneurs and help them to develop their ideas.
