Taming the Unstructured Data Problem Dave Kellogg, CEO, MarkLogic Taming the Unstructured Data ProblemThe explosive growth of unstructured information across government has created challenges that cannot be easily solved using traditional relational databases. The massive volume and mission-critical nature of government information has critical implications on selecting and implementing the right technology. Join Dave Kellogg, award-winning blogger and CEO of MarkLogic, as he provides insight into the evolution of database systems and today's rapidly changing requirements. What about NoSQL systems such as key value stores and Hadoop? What about document-oriented databases? And how can the government address the changes in application delivery, such as mobile? Dave will also address the rise of unstructured and semi-structured information and discusses the best ways for government to turn the challenge of these disparate information types into an opportunity. |

Today's Challenge in Government: What to do with Unstructured Information and Why Doing Nothing isn't an Option Noel Yuhanna, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research, Inc. Today's Challenge in Government: What to do with Unstructured Information and Why Doing Nothing isn't an Option21st century governments are facing a modern information challenge. They must sift through the rapidly growing mass of unstructured information in order to connect citizens, employees, and global stakeholders instantaneously to get to the information that matters most. And they must do so efficiently and cost-effectively without sacrificing accuracy and speed. Traditional RDBMSs are not fit for this complex challenge, but a number of emerging database technologies are, and they are confronting long-held assumptions about the best way to manage unstructured information. What makes these purpose-built databases so relevant for government information? What should IT leaders keep in mind when considering these alternatives? Our guest speaker, Noel Yuhanna will answer these and other questions, as well as share preliminary results from Forrester's independent annual Database Management survey. |

Searching the Library of Congress: Developing a Web-based Library Search Application Morgan Cundiff, Nathan Trail, Clayton Redding, Library of Congress Searching the Library of Congress: Developing a Web-based Library Search ApplicationThe Library of Congress is using MarkLogic to develop a web-based application to search, retrieve, and display metadata and digitized documents from the Library's collections. The project makes use of XML standards developed by the library community (including METS, MODS, MARCXML, EAD, and TEI) to express metadata from various Library datasets. These datasets are ingested into a single MarkLogic database and are thereby aggregated into a single search target for the first time. The benefit to users will be both greater simplicity and greater power in searching the collections of the Library of Congress. |
MarkLogic Technical Overview Chris Biow, Federal CTO, MarkLogic MarkLogic Technical OverviewMarkLogic provides a unique DBMS, designed from the ground-up to handle information with equal agility across schemas, levels and types of structure, and levels of scale. We'll take a quick trip through some of the dimensions of MarkLogic's capabilities, including spatial data and queries, distributed replication of databases, the ability to search in real-time, and a novel combination of querying that spans retrospective and real-time search in a new way. |
Getting Started with MarkLogic Server (Hands On) Clark D. Richey, Jr., Principal Technologist, Federal, MarkLogic Getting Started with MarkLogic Server (Hands On)Spend the afternoon with senior consultants from MarkLogic getting oriented to MarkLogic Server. You will install the server on your laptop and work through loading documents, configuring your database, writing basic queries, and constructing a very basic application in MarkLogic Server. By the end of the first half of the afternoon session you will have a functional application up and running! We will then begin with a review of ApplicationBuilder and the SearchAPI to look at what functionality is provided out of the box with these tools, and how you can extend them to suit the needs of your project. In this workshop you will load sample documents, build an application, then add features to the application by extending the code that is generated by ApplicationBuilder. By the end of the session you will have used our best practices for extending the functionality of this powerful tool. |

Warrior Gateway and the Power of Information: Leveraging XML to transform the Veterans information landscape Devin Holmes, Executive Director, Warrior Gateway Warrior Gateway and the Power of Information: Leveraging XML to transform the Veterans information landscapeEvery day we use the power of other people's opinions, insights and experiences to make decisions. We look to Yelp to help us find a restaurant, Rotten Tomatoes to help us decide what movie to see or Trip Advisor for vacation and hotel advice. So why don't our veterans have those same tools available to them to help them decide on where to go for healthcare, job opportunities, family assistance, education, and training? Join Devin Holmes, Executive Director, Warrior Gateway as he takes you on the journey of the power of crowd-sourcing and collaboration to help today's veterans make better decisions about what government program or non-profit organization to turn to for help. By leveraging social dimensions and providing a forum, he will talk about how empowering our veterans to share these experiences using Warrior Gateway helps the overall community, gives them a voice and in turn how you can help veterans in your community. |
