About NIE
The Journal News Newspaper in Education Program was created to offer newspapers as an educational tool (current textbook) to area schools. Our goal is to encourage children to read critically and reflectively, to become involved in public issues and gain an understanding of the world around them. In short, to become responsible adults who are prepared to move from the school environment into the business community with confidence and the necessary skill to succeed.
NIE is an international system of cooperation between school districts and local newspapers and has been in existence since the 1950s. In the United States, more than 700 newspapers actively participate in NIE, which enable teachers to receive newspapers at reduced rates for use in their classroom and offer free curriculum materials in-service workshops. The Journal News became involved in NIE in 1987.
