About This Site

Note: We have a mobile app for iOS and Android. Go to scriptures.byu.edu/sci to learn more. You can find the app in the App Store and on Google Play (search for "LDS Scripture Citation Index"). Please post bug reports or feature requests at groups.google.com/group/lds-sci.

Welcome to the LDS Scripture Citation Index. This index links from scriptures to the general conference talks, Journal of Discourses speeches, and writings in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith that cite those scriptures.  So, for example, suppose you want to know who has cited 1 Ne. 3:7 in general conference; click on the Book of Mormon link at the left and scroll down to 1 Ne. 3; there you'll find the answer.  Who has quoted Matt. 5:48?  Use the New Testament index to find out.

We have indexed the scriptures cited by speakers in LDS General Conference between 1942 and the present, and those cited by speakers recorded in the Journal of Discourses between 1839 and 1886.  The citations in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith come from the special edition, Scriptural Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, edited by Richard C. Galbraith and published by Deseret Book in 1993 (ISBN 0875796478).

You can sort the citation index by scripture (the default), by speaker, or by date of citation.

To begin, click on one of the books to the left and you'll see a list of citations for verses in that book.  A citation looks like this: 2 Pet. 1:4 / (51−A, 95, DOM).  This means:

Scripture: 2 Pet. 1:4 "...be partakers of the divine nature..."
Conference: April 1951
Page:95
Speaker:David O. McKay

In a citation record, "A" means "April", the annual general conference, and "O" means "October", the semiannual conference. "03" means "2003", but "42" means "1942" (this index covers 1942 to the present, so for numbers smaller than 42 add 2000).  To view a complete list of general conference speakers, click on the "Speakers" tab in the menu on the left.  To view the text of a scripture, click on its citation (e.g., 2 Pet. 1:4).  To view the text of a talk, click on the talk citation (e.g., 51-A, 95, DOM).

For Journal of Discourses citations (e.g., 10:194a,BY), 10:194 refers to the volume (10) and page number (194); a or b refers to the left or right column, respectively. BY refers to Brigham Young. Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith citations are of the form (296,JS), where 296 is the page number. Place the mouse pointer over any citation and a help box will appear giving greater detail.

In General Conference talks, synchronization arrows (spacer ) appear to the left of each scriptural reference. Clicking on these arrows will synchronize the left Citation Window to display all other occurrences of that scripture.

In Journal of Discourses talks, each page and column are separated by yellow (left column, a) or blue (right column, b) markers. Within each marker are two icons. The left icon (spacer ) brings up a PDF copy of the printed page; the right icon (spacer ) brings up the BYU Library digital scan of the original.

Topics

Topical entries for the Journal of Discourses are ordered alphabetically from Aaron to Zion. Subheadings within each topic are individually selectable.

Speakers

Speakers are alphabetized by last name (A to Z) and abbreviation (initials). Clicking on Names will reverse the ordering (Z to A), and going back and forth between Names and Abbrev will change the ordering from last name to first name. Clicking again on Abbrev will reverse the ordering of first name from high to low.

Options

Five search options are available:

  1. Starting and ending dates, 1830 to the present.
  2. Speaker, Abrea to Zwick.
  3. Corpus: All, General Conference, Improvement Era, Journal of Discourses.
  4. Sort by: Scriptures by date, Ascending or Descending; Citation Frequency.
  5. Group by: Full Citation or Individual Verse (slower).

For example, if you would like to see Brigham Young's top 100 scriptures, select Speaker: Brigham Young, Sort by: Citation Frequency.

After choosing your Search Options, you may select Apply Filter to invoke them. Choosing Clear Filter or simply closing the window will nullify them.

Table of Contents

Clicking on either the Journal of Discourses or General Conference will bring up the respective listing of talks. By default, the Journal of Discourses table of contents is sorted by volume and the General Conference index is sorted by date. The Journal of Discourses allows three other sort options: Date, Speaker, and Title (see the Order-By control in the upper right portion of the window). General Conference talks can also be ordered by Speaker.

Navigation Using Breadcrumbs

Once a talk, either from the Journal of Discourses or General Conference, has been displayed, you may further navigate through the set of talks using any of the “breadcrumbs” listed in the line just above the talk. For Journal of Discourses talks, you may navigate by Volume, Speaker, or Year. For General Conference talks, you may navigate by Year, Month, Session, or Speaker.

Note:  The proceedings of the April 1943 conference were published in the May, June, and July issues of the 1943 Improvement Era due to a wartime paper shortage.  The October 1957 conference was canceled due to an epidemic of Asian flu in the United States.  Elder Harold B. Lee's priesthood address at the October 1967 conference was published in the January 1968 issue of the Improvement Era, pages 26-31. Also, in our index, page numbers for conference addresses between 1942 and 1970 reference the Conference Reports due to the scarcity of Improvement Era magazines.
