Oh dear, this is going to get a reaction:
That’s right folks, if you want to disguise yourself, use some burnt cork.
But remember…
…be sure to get the dialect right.
Like I said, oh dear.

THAT’S SO TERRIBLE! As a black man I should be a offended…and yet I’d rather laugh my ass off. Good panel today, but billy should have stuck with the sunglasses. lol.

THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON!
Take a guess at what won’t be reprinted in the ‘Best Of Shazam’ volumes!

It’s already been published in the Archives, Volume III.
Keep in mind that these are stories published just a year or three after Jimmy Stewart appeared in blackface in ‘ Wonderful Word’ and Judy Garland in ‘Babes in Arms’. Doesn’t make it awesome, but certainly indicative of the time.

DC won’t print a super-invulnerable baby in a microwave but they will reprint hideous racism. Gods, it’s like Quesada is in charge of both companies.
And what insane plot-reason did Stewart have for dressing up in blackface?

The Golden Age Flash Archives volume 2 actually had a disclaimer. Let’s see if I can find it. Ah, here it is:
The comics reprinted in this volume were produced in a time when racism played a larger role in society and popular culture both consciously and unconsciously. They are reprinted without alteration for historical reference.
And yet even the Chinatown story (the rest of the book is pretty much solid white) is nowhere near the level of these bits from Captain Marvel.

I wonder if the blackface made it through the transformation into Private Marvel

Rastus Washington Brown…
I think the writer of this has seen more unicorns than he has black people.
I hope Judd Winnick isn’t taking notes.

They were thinking that they considered black people inferior and liked to make fun of them, basically. Have you ever seen Captain Marvel’s sidekick, Steamboat?

I have to wonder what Alan Moore would have done with this. Probably would have blamed it on Johnny.
