These poems are not here to 'take the edge off', but to stick more edges on. Indeed, the best of these poems are all edge. Edges are where connections are made. Edges are where words meet other words, other ideas, other realities. Don't think about the "cutting edge" (too dull a metaphor now), but about the interface, the periphery, the precipice. The edge is where we stand to feel at its fullest the possibility of change: not fearing loss so much as fearing our aversion to the risk of loss. To stand there, on the edge, takes a little courage, of course: liking you as they must, these poems ask for the best of you. The History of Airports brings together for the first time writings for performance from across the whole span of Chris Goode's work. Extracts from his critically acclaimed theatre works, and stand-alone texts of a more fugitive nature, sit alongside examples of his dazzling late modernist poetry and a handful of pieces that seem to defy classification entirely. Many of these texts have never before been available in print.
Chris Goode's work as, variously, writer, director, deviser, performer and sound artist has been seen in venues ranging from experimental spaces such as Camden People's Theatre (of which he was artistic director 2001-04) to Sydney Opera House: as well as, quite frequently, in audiences' own homes. As a poet he has published three chapbooks with Barque Press, and read widely. He is an Artsadmin associate artist, and was formerly an associate researcher at Rose Bruford College. He blogs at Thompson's Bank of Communicable Desire.

Before there were hoodies - but after there were tender buttons - there was COAT. Early in this millennium the COAT boys developed a cult following on the London experimental scene with their barely scrutable blend of spoken (and unspoken) word, cheap plinkity sounds, baleful noise, convulsive improvibrations and subliminal wind-farming.
Their only album (to date), copy of compiles a bogglesome variety of COAT's home recordings made between 1994-2000, including sound tracks from early theatre works by Chris Goode (COAT's Lowe to the Tennant of fellow performance-causer Jeremy Hardingham). Here are self-mangling tales of oceanic explorers, furniture-resembling women, immolated movie stars, and piles and piles of animatronic rubbish. Here are whistle-friendly tunes, obnoxious ululations, prototypical ringtones and, on one track, a worrying lo-fi mashup of Gary Numan, Guns 'n' Roses and Mozart.
