“Hamlet” takes the stage at IU Southeast
NEW ALBANY, IN, (March 7, 2013) – Get ready for a ghostly good time when “Hamlet” premieres at Indiana University Southeast this weekend.
The IU Southeast Theatre Department is producing the Shakespearean classic March 7-10 and March 14-17 at the Robinson Theater in the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center at IU Southeast.
Directed by Daniel R. Hill, adjunct lecturer in theatre, the show features IU Southeast junior Mitch Donahue as Hamlet.
The classic play vividly portrays both true and feigned madness — from overwhelming grief to seething rage — and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption.
It opens on a dark winter night when a ghost walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. The ghost resembles the recently deceased King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has inherited the throne and married the king’s widow, Queen Gertrude. When Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king, visits the ghost, it speaks to him, declaring ominously that it is indeed his father’s spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. Ordering Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who usurped his throne and married his wife, the ghost disappears with the dawn.
“Hamlet” takes the stage at 8 p.m. March 7-9 and March 14-16, and 2:30 p.m. March 10 and 17.
Tickets are available at the Ogle Center ticket office or by calling (812) 941-2525. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for senior citizens, students, and IU Southeast faculty and staff. Free parking is available from one hour before curtain time until one hour following the end of the performance in the Dogwood lot only. The Dogwood lot is directly in front of the Ogle Center.
