A very brief overview of Fertility Awareness

A woman is only able to get pregnant for a few days out of each cycle, around the time of ovulation (when an egg is released from your ovary). The main purpose of the Fertility Awareness Method is to learn how to identify these fertile days.

Despite the commonly discussed 28 day cycle where ovulation occurs on day 14, the truth is that the actual time of ovulation varies from woman to woman and from cycle to cycle. Luckily, there are two easy-to-observe outward signs that all women can learn to identify – waking body temperature and cervical fluid – that provide you a daily view into your fertility status. By observing these two signs, and recording the findings with Ova Ova each day, we will automatically apply the rules of the Fertility Awareness Method to give you an accurate picture of your fertility.

When to start charting

The best day to start charting is on the first day of your cycle. When is this? The first day of your cycle is the first day of your period. By starting on day 1 of your cycle, this will give you a chance to buy a basal body thermometer, get off your birth control pill (if applicable), and learn all you’ll need to know to practice this method.

If you are already familiar with fertility charting, or are excited to get started right away, you can start a chart in the middle of a cycle by estimating when your cycle day 1 occurred. Just know that depending on how far along you are in your cycle, Ova Ova may or may not be able to pinpoint when you ovulated during this first cycle.

Example Chart

Here’s an example of an in-progress fertility chart.  All you need to know to understand how to read this chart is that green means fertile and blue means infertile.  So in this example, you can see the user was infertile days 1 through 10 of her cycle, and then on day 11 and 12 she was fertile.  The current fertility status is also clearly displayed on the top right hand corner of your chart for easy reference.


The following is an example of a completed chart.  The bulls-eye indicates the date of ovulation, which occurred on day 18 of her cycle (January 10th).  The hearts on the chart represent unprotected sex, so you can see that this user was attempting to achieve a pregnancy by having unprotected sex during her fertile days.
