Developmental Editing & Beta Reading

The Bannerwing Betas
you can handle the truth

The Bannerwing Betas are alliteration-loving, voracious readers who can help writers by identifying plot holes or inconsistencies, problematic plot development and character development or motivation issues.

The Bannerwing Betas are not final editors. We aren’t in the business of line editing or discovering the minute details professional editors pinpoint during the editing process. Using a beta reader does not replace using a professional editor, but it will strengthen your work in progress before your story lands in your editor’s inbox, shortening the editing process and saving you money in the long run.

Beta Reading with The Bannerwing Betas

Mandy and Angela will both read each project. Our two-person team provides the benefit of two sets of eyes — we’ve learned we pick up different discrepancies and offer a well-rounded response to your work.

You will receive written notes concerning plot and character development, which can include plot arcs, pacing and character authenticity and development. A 30-minute Skype message chat is included in the rate. Additional Skype chats can be arranged at an additional cost.

Developmental Editing Rates

Bannerwing Beta Readers will also work with you to improve your manuscript. Our beta read is a comprehensive look at what works and what needs improvement in your current work-in-progress.

Developmental editing takes that analysis to a higher level. During a developmental edit, we will perform a beta read analysis for your manuscript. After completing our notes, we will work together to develop a plan to improve your manuscript. Our developmental edits will offer suggestions about ways to improve plot arcs, better develop your characters, and increase the overall reader engagement in the characters and story you’re creating.

Meet the Readers

Mandy Dawson – Mandy Dawson is the creator of In Mandyland, an almost daily blog recording her adventures in juggling a full-time job, two active children, four arguing hens and one ex-husband. She’s been writing since the fourth grade when she created a novel set in the fictional Western town of Calamine named for the lotion because it sounded exotic. When she’s not writing, she can be found burning dinners while she stares off into space with a story idea. She writes for Momtastic and is an assistant editor for Write on Edge. She’s appeared on Makes Fun of Stuff, BlogHer, Aiming Low, and Mamapedia. Her short stories have appeared in Precipice: The Literary Anthology of Write on Edge, Metaphysical Gravity, and Echoes in Darkness.

Angela Amman – Angela is a freelance writer who writes at allParenting, contributes to the women’s empowerment site Just.Be.Enough. and reviews life one book at a time on Tread Softly, her personal book review blog. As a managing editor at Write on Edge, she writes about the craft and practice of writing and works to build and nurture a supportive creative writing community. When not reading, writing or wrangling her two preschoolers, Angela runs and wears too much lip gloss – generally not at the same time.
