IEP – Just the Facts

intellectual property defined:
property (as an idea, invention, or process) that derives from the work of the mind or intellect; also : an application, right, or registration relating to this (via M-W)

But what does that really mean?

fair use defined:
a legal doctrine that portions of copyrighted materials may be used without permission of the copyright owner provided the use is fair and reasonable, does not substantially impair the value of the materials, and does not curtail the profits reasonably expected by the owner (via M-W)

But what does that really mean?

I’m not a lawyer, but a lawyer will tell you that fair use is a very gray area. If you’re in an educational setting and offline, I think it’s much more straightforward. So, I encourage you to learn what it means but be very careful using it as justification for posting anything that belongs to someone else. Even if you credit them. Credit isn’t permission.
