The Board of Directors oversees the operation of the California Immunization Coalition. They handle the financial responsibilities and create the strategic short-term and long-term goals of the organization. The role of the Board of Directors is to:

  • Develop and monitor the budget
  • Oversee all contracts and legal obligations of corporation
  • Provide oversight of strategic plan
  • Evaluate all program and corporate functions
  • Plan for annual planning meetings

Directors and Officers

President             Erika Jenssen, MPH Communicable Disease Programs Manager Contra Costa Health Services, Public Health Divisionspacer Erika Jenssen is currently the Communicable Disease Programs Chief for the Public Health Division of Contra Costa Health Services. After receiving her MPH in Policy/Administration from UC Berkeley in 1995, Erika began working for the Immunization Program as the Immunization Coalition Coordinator. That same year the Contra Costa Automated Immunization Registry was developed and for the next six years, Ms. Jenssen focused on the implementation and expansion of the Immunization Registry and in 2001 received the “Best Use of Data” award from Every Child by Two at the National Immunization Registry Conference in Little Rock, AR. In 2002, Ms. Jenssen became the Health Emergency Coordinator for Contra Costa Health Services, organizing a one-day blitz of 11 mass vaccination clinics during the influenza vaccine shortage and building infrastructure necessary to respond to health emergencies. From 2005-2011, Ms. Jenssen was the Immunization Coordinator, leading the local effort to ensure that Contra Costa residents had access to vaccines and working with the media to broadcast positive immunization messages. During the H1N1 pandemic, this meant coordinating over 100 school-based vaccination clinics, distributing vaccine to providers, and holding community vaccination clinics in shopping malls and large performance venues.
Vice President  Oliver Brooks, MD Chief of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Watts Health Care Corporationspacer Dr. Brooks received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Morehouse College. He received his M.D. degree from Howard University College of Medicine. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital-Oakland. He practiced in the underserved communities of North Oakland and Richmond for four years before accepting a pediatric position at the Watts Health Care Corporation where he is presently Associate Medical Director and Chief of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, and Chairman of the Quality Management Committee. He is Medical Director of the Jordan High School-Based Health Clinic. He is Chairman of the Immunize LA Families Coalition leading the group for 10 years. He is a member of the Board of the CA Immunization Coalition. He served on the Executive Committee of Centinela Hospital where he was Chairman of their Peer Review Committee. He serves on the Physician Quality committee for LA Care, for whom he is also a consultant. He is past-president of the Golden State (CA) Medical Association and past president of the Miller-Lawrence Medical and Dental Society, both components of the National Medical Association of which he is the National Secretary. He is Assistant Clinical Professor, Western University of Health Sciences. He is a member of many civic organizations.
Treasurer/Secretary Kris Calvin CEO, AAP-CA and AAP-CA Foundation spacer Ms. Calvin has been a strong advocate for immunizations and a key advisor and supporter of the Coalition. Ms. Calvin has held the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the American Academy of Pediatrics, California Chapter since 1991 and has served as CEO for the Children’s Health Systems Foundation since 1995. In addition to serving as a CIC ex-officio Board member, she has held leadership roles with a variety of non-profit partnerships, including the Robert Wood Johnson’s Covering All Kids initiative and the California Women and Children’s Health Collaborative. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology from Stanford University and completed six years of doctoral level economics coursework at UC Berkeley.
Co-Chair Advocacy Steve Barrow President & CEO Advocates for Health, Economics and Development (AHEAD) spacer Steve Barrow is the President & CEO of Advocates for Health, Economics and Development (AHEAD). Steve has worked for over 30 years in the health and human service arena in California, primarily with a focus on policy development, systems change, and building state and local policy and issue based coalitions and collaboratives. During this time Steve has served on the Board of Directors and as the Director or governmental affairs for a variety of organizations including: California State Rural Health Association, California Common Cause, University of San Diego’s Children’s Advocacy Institute and Center for Public Interest Law, CA Budget Project, California Coalition for Children’s Safety and Health, California Immunization Coalition, California Children’s Advocates Roundtable, California Adolescent Health, California Dental Health Foundation’s Advisory Committee. He is also a grant writer, strategic planner and facilitator working out of the Results Strategies & Advocacy Institute (RSAI) consulting organization he formed to provide a base for his work with a number of rural counties when they developed their initial First 5 Commissions’ Strategic Plans.
Co-Chair Emerging Issues                   Randy Bergen, MD Pediatric Infectious Diseases Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regionspacer Dr. Bergen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. After completing his residency at Children’s Hospital Oakland, a pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Stanford, and an MPH at U C Berkeley he began work for the Permanente Medical Group in Walnut Creek California. Over the last 20 years he has served as both a general pediatrician and an infectious disease consultant for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. He is presently the Chief of Outpatient Pediatrics at Walnut Creek, Regional Clinical Lead for the Northern California KP Influenza Vaccine Program, and a member of the TPMG Board of Directors. Besides his clinical duties for Kaiser he maintains an interest in volunteer work both locally and internationally. He has served on local non-profit boards like FamilyPaths in Alameda County and worked in international settings like Indonesia after the 2005 tsunami, in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and at a hospital in the DR Congo that specializes in the care of children with HIV.
Co-Chair Advocacy Lydia Bourne Bourne & Associatesspacer Lydia Bourne’s professional experiences are varied. Her primary professional experience has been in health care – as a Registered Nurse, health educator, program developer and administrator, giving her experience in disparate health care settings. Presently she is owner of her own government relations firm, Bourne & Associates. Her legislative experience since 1994 has included health care, K-12 and higher educational issues in addition to employer issues related to licensed heath care professionals. She has been successful in navigating health and educational issues through the legislative process and in influencing Governors Wilson, Davis and Schwarzenegger to sign legislation on key issues. In addition to her professional experience, Ms. Bourne has long been active as a volunteer and community activist, serving on the boards and advisory committees of numerous health related non-profit and professional organizations. She currently sits on the California Immunization Coalition (CIC) board; a non-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to achieving and maintaining full immunization protection for all Californians; she is also the Co-Chair of CIC’s Policy Committee. In addition, she is a long time board member and CFO of the California Kids HealthCare Foundation, a charitable program that provides low cost medical and dental insurance for children. Ms. Bourne has an undergraduate degree in Nursing, certification in Public Health Nursing and a Master’s in Human Services Administration.
Chair Communication   Suzi Bouveron, MPH spacer Ms. Bouveron has been a health educator with the California Department of Public Health Immunization Branch since 2000. She is housed in the San Diego County Health Department and represents CDPH and CIC in Southern California with coalitions and partner organizations. Prior to CDPH, she spent 10 years in Central and West Africa managing public health projects. She has a B.S. in Community Health Education from Cal State University Long Beach and an M.P.H. in Global Health from Boston University.
Director at Large Lisa Brill, MPH, MPP Program Manager, Flu Vaccination Program Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regionspacer Lisa Brill is the Project Manager for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Influenza Vaccination Program. She coordinates the activities of a multitude of departments within the Kaiser Permanente integrated system, including the Appointment and Advice Call Center, Pharmacy, Member and Marketing Communications, Regional Health Education, Media Relations, Internal Communications, Infectious Disease, Infection Control, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, The Permanente Medical Group, Vaccine Study Center and Employee Health Services. She provides technical assistance and guidance to Flu Coordinators in all facilities in Northern California. One million members and employees were vaccinated during the 2007-08 flu season. Lisa has been with Kaiser Permanente for 9 years in a variety of positions, including Operations Manager and Project Manager for Regional Health Education, and Health Consultant for Patient Care Services and Adult Primary Care. Prior to Kaiser, she was the Senior Administrative Analyst for the Family Health Outcomes Project, University of California. There she coordinated the administration of a project to enhance the capacity of CA local maternal/child health staff and other state MCH staff to perform quantitative needs assessment for program planning and evaluation. Ms. Brill received her Masters degrees in Public Health and in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
Director at Large Yasuko Fukuda, MD Private Practice – San Francisco AAP-CAspacer Dr. Fukuda received her medical education from Mayo Medical School. Internship and Residency at Children’s Hospital of Oakland. Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Past AAP District IX; Executive Board officer & Member; Past Member of National Nomination Committee; Board of California Immunization Coalition. She currently works as a Pediatrician in a private office and is affiliated with California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Fukuda is also associated with Children’s Hospital Oakland as well as on the Pediatric Clinical Faculty of UCSF Medical Center involved with teaching medical students and residents.
Co-Chair Education Kathleen Gustafson, MPH spacer Kathleen Gustafson received a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico and an M.P.H. from the University of Hawaii School of Public Health. She began working in immunization in 1990 during the measles epidemic, and was instrumental in establishing the San Diego Infant Immunization Initiative (I-3), now known as the San Diego Immunization Coalition (SDIC). She retired as Chief of the Immunization Branch, County of San Diego Health and Human Services. An active member of the California Coalition for Childhood Immunizations (C3I) from its founding through the merge with the California Adult Immunization Coalition to form CIC, she has served extensively on the boards of C3I and CIC as chair of several committees and as President of C3I. She is currently co-chair of the Education Committee and a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
Chair – Health Disparities Workgroup  Julia Heinzerling, MPH Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Immunization Programspacer Julia Heinzerling is a member of the California Immunization Coalition’s Board of Directors and serves as chair of the Coalition’s Health Disparities and Governance Groups. She is a Policy and Advocacy Specialist with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health in the Immunization Program. In this role, Ms. Heinzerling develops educational materials, presentations and web content; launches promotional campaigns; leads policy and advocacy efforts; and implements special projects. She also participates in Department-wide quality improvement efforts and serves on the editorial board for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s provider publication, Rx for Prevention. Ms. Heinzerling’s prior work with a medical management company, California’s Medicare quality improvement organization, and a non-profit research institute focused primarily on the areas of health promotion, social support, disparities, quality improvement, and grants management. Ms. Heinzerling received her Masters of Public Health degree, with a specialty in health policy and administration, from the University of California at Berkeley.
Co-Chair Emerging Issues Wilbert (Bill) Mason, MD, MPH Head of Division of Infections Diseases Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Past President, AAP California Chapter 1spacer Dr. Mason (M.D., University of California Irvine, 1970; M.P.H. [Epidemiology], University of California Los Angeles, 1995) is an attending physician in of the Division of Infectious Disease at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. His research focus has been in Kawasaki disease and, more recently, the implementation of evidence based medicine through the use of clinical practice guidelines in the hospital setting. He has also been active in the study and promotion of medical safety in pediatrics and currently served as the Chief Medical Quality Officer at CHLA until 2011. He  participated in the Child Health Accountability Initiative of the Child Health Corporation of America since its inception in 1997 and was Co-Medical Director in 2001-2003. He is a Past-President of Chapter 2, District IX, of the American Academy of Pediatrics and currently serves as co-chair of the State Government Affairs Committee of District IX of the AAP and sits on the National Nominating Committee of the National AAP.
Director at Large James McCabe Dip.Pharm (SA) RPh Director – Patient Care Services, Safeway Inc. Corporate Pharmacyspacer James McCabe, Dip Pharm (SA) Rph, responsible for credentialing, compliance and oversight of immunization and disease state management programs at Safeway with particular focus on excellence in patient centered care. Additionally, evaluation of new projects and innovation. He has been with Safeway for over 13 years. James has been an active member of the California Coalition for Childhood Immunization (C3I) and has also served on CIC’s Advisory Council. Born 1958 in Accra, Ghana, and grew up in Swaziland and South Africa. Completed schooling in South Africa and attended pharmacy school, graduating in 1982.
Director at Large Mark Sawyer, MD Professor of Pediatrics University of California San Diego School of Medicine spacer Dr. Sawyer is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and a Pediatric Infectious Disease specialist at the UCSD School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. He is the medical director of the UCSD San Diego Immunization Partnership, a contract with the San Diego County Agency for Health and Human Services to improve immunization delivery in San Diego. Dr. Sawyer is active in several groups involved in developing vaccine policy and is the current chair of the California Immunization Committee, an advisory committee to the California State Immunization Branch, a member of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and past-president of the California Immunization Coalition. Dr. Sawyer is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and President of AAP Chapter 3, District IX. He belongs to numerous professional societies including the Society of Pediatric Research, the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. The San Diego Immunization Partnership involves work in all areas of immunization delivery including support of the San Diego Immunization Registry, quality improvement activities in both public and private clinics in San Diego, education of primary care residents about immunization delivery, adult immunization initiatives, and community outreach.
Chair – Registry Linda Scott Director, Orange County Immunization Coalitionspacer Linda Scott has worked to promote and improve immunization services and vaccine coverage in Orange County and throughout California for well over a decade. As Coordinator of the Orange County Immunization Coalition (OCIC), Ms. Scott established an effective and inclusive organization that was particularly successful in collaboration and utilization of partnerships in its work to raise awareness of immunization issues throughout her community.In her role as Director of the OCIC, Linda was active in statewide immunization activities, and was an early and active member of the California Coalition for Childhood Immunization (C3I) serving as chair of the Communication Committee and then as Vice President and President. In this leadership role she was instrumental in the development of C3I as a statewide voice for the health and immunization of California’s children.In 2005, Ms. Scott was appointed Immunization Coordinator for Orange County, adding the responsibilities of managing the immunization program of one of the largest counties in the state to her coalition responsibilities, which were absorbed into the Coordinator’s position.
Co-Chair – Education              Hoa Su, MPH Manager, Health Education Health Net of California, Inc.spacer Hoa Su is Manager of Health Education at Health Net, Inc. and has been with Health Net’s Medicaid program for six years. Mr. Su holds a Master of Public Health degree in community health sciences from University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of California, Los Angeles. Mr. Su has fifteen years of experience in health care management, program planning and development, implementation and evaluation. In his current position, Mr. Su is responsible for the planning and administration of health education programs for Health Net’s Medi-Cal and Healthy Families Program members in California. Mr. Su establishes standards and ensures implementation and compliance to meet Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB), and National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) contractual/accreditation requirements. Prior to Health Net, Mr. Su was the Immunization Program and Immunization Coalition Coordinator for the City of Pasadena Public Health Department. Mr. Su currently serves as an Education Co-Chair and a member of Board of Directors for California Immunization Coalition.
