LESAM/MCEER team assesses damage in NYS following Tropical Storm Irene
The 2011 issue of the MCEER Bulletin announces the election of Andrew S. Whittaker, Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo, as MCEER Director. Whittaker, an expert in earthquake and blast engineering, is the sixth director in the Center’s 25-year history. In other news, MCEER continued its involvement in helping Haiti rebuild following the devastating earthquake that struck the island nation in January 2010, partnered with UB’s LESAM (Landscape-based Environmental System Analysis & Modeling) Center to assess damage in New York State following Tropical Storm Irene, and investigated damage to eccentrically braced frames following the 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake. Educational endeavors, including the renewal of a cooperative agreement between the University at Buffalo and the ROSE School in Pavia, Italy, and other outreach activities are profiled in this issue.
