Western Laboratory Renovation / Expansion Project

The Expansion and Renovation of the Western Forensic Laboratory is proceeding on schedule. The project will add approximately 62,000 square feet to the facility and renovate/reconfigure approximately 27,000 square feet of existing space that supports both DFS and OCME operations.

Physical Evidence Recovery Kit (PERK) Inventory - Deadline is February 1, 2015

Pursuant to Senate Bill 658 (Chapter 642 of the 2014 Acts of Assembly), all state and local law enforcement agencies must inventory all PERKs in their custody that may contain biological evidence that were collected but not submitted to DFS for analysis prior to July 1, 2014. Controlled Substances

The Controlled Substances Section analyzes materials for the presence of controlled substances and marijuana. Controlled substances may be present in powders, solid materials, liquids, plant material, mushrooms, blotter paper, and food items. In addition, the section examines pharmaceutical preparations such as tablets, capsules, injectables and transdermal patches.

Mitochondrial DNA

The Mitochondrial DNA Section provides maternal lineage DNA analysis to assist law enforcement agencies in their investigations of Missing Persons and cold cases. The analysis may yield results in evidence samples of limited size or poor quality when traditional DNA analysis does not produce usable data.
