Bachelor of Arts in Music

Designed for the student who wants a broad education in music, the Bachelor of Arts degree offers a balanced program of study in a wide range of subjects. In addition to the traditional emphasis on music theory, history and performance, Cal Poly's program includes American music, music of non-Western cultures, and the application of sound design. The program provides a large number of elective courses which allows the student to concentrate in a particular area or combine music with other subjects.

Admission

Because the Music Department wants to help students make the best decision regarding their college career, in addition to the CSU application process, we have established an additional level of application that is required in order to be considered for admission to the music program. This consists of a Supplementary Application Form and an audition/interview.

Admission to the Music Department is during the Fall Quarter only. The supplementary application process is as follows:

  1. Once a CSU application has been submitted to Cal Poly (by the November 30 deadline), the Admissions Office will forward the student's name and other pertinent data to our department. All music applicants will receive an email from the Cal Poly Admissions Office confirming receipt of their application, and directing them to the Music Department website.
  2. In early January, applicants who meet the CSU and Cal Poly eligibility criteria will be invited to schedule an audition or submit an audition recording (DVD format), and complete and submit our supplementary application materials, which will be posted on our Web page, along with our audition dates.  An in-person audition is highly recommended and preferable to a recorded audition. If a recording is submitted, the student may be asked to perform a live audition if the music faculty decides it is necessary.  Auditions are usually scheduled during the first weeks of February, and acceptance notifications generally go out in mid-March. Your performance at the audition should help indicate that you have the potential to successfully participate in one of the Music Department’s major ensembles* on the instrument that you play at the audition, or by singing if you audition as a vocalist (*orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz big band, choir, and Arab Music Ensemble).  A short piano placement and a music theory and musicianship assessment will also be given.  Students submitting DVD recordings are required to take these same placements/assessments via Skype and/or other means and will be contacted to schedule these and an interview after having submitted their DVD.

  3. To apply for a scholarship, an in-person audition is required.

Apply to Cal Poly from the the Web page of the Cal Poly Admissions Office. For general Cal Poly admissions questions, you should contact the Admissions Office.

Apply as an Internal Transfer to the Music Department. This is an option for students already attending Cal Poly who wish to change majors or add a major. For guidelines, please go to the College of Liberal Arts Advising page.
