Activating Spaces with Design Museum Boston

Opportunity lies at the intersection of form and function. We see this every day when we work with our customers to re-conceive the places they work into spaces that not only drive better results, but also provide a richer day-to-day experience. Spaces that are thoughtfully planned bring out the best in people, and also bring the best people.

This is true not just of the places we work, but also of the places we live. The latest project from our friends at Design Museum Boston proves just how fruitful investing in form and function can be in an urban, public space. Two years ago they conceived of Street Seats, a global challenge set to improve the livability of the Fort Point District through socially and environmentally conscious bench design. This coming April, twenty designs will be unveiled as physical fixtures of the community.

It’s a simple concept with complex and wonderful benefits. Work collaboratively to think creatively about space, then apply the collective solutions to create new beautiful spaces that enhance the neighborhood; that transform a hustle and bustle sidewalk into an opportunity to gather, eat and converse. Brynn Leggett, Design Museum Boston’s Development Coordinator, describes the program as an exercise in “activating a space.”

Browsing through the 100+ 1” scaled bench models, it was easy to envision how this merger of form and function would accomplish that.

City planners see a bourgeoning urban area and want to make the most of every corner, street and ocean view. We see an office or a school and want to make the most of every meeting room, classroom and hallway. As is evidenced by their work and ours, great design can accomplish both.
