New Orleans, LA – When educators at Tulane University returned to campus after Hurricane Katrina evacuations, they f aced the storm’s devastation. Like other colleges and universities in and around New Orleans, Tulane sustained millions of dollars in damages and halted academics for months after the storm. Faculty, staff, and students faced serious disruptions in their work, classes, and lives. But in the Tulane community’s recovery, administrators saw academic opportunity. They realized their campus had become an ideal setting for disaster management students as a living laboratory of resilience and rebuilding. Read more...

DRLA Graduate Students Leave Class Behind for Storm Recovery Work

They could have been in class on Nov. 14 on the Tulane uptown campus. Instead, DRLA graduate students Geoff Grimes and Andrew Snyder were near storm-ravaged Staten Island, N.Y., in a Red Cross truck bringing hot meals to storm victims and first responders.

Spring Break Brings Lessons For DRLA Graduate Students

spacer
Tulane students from the inaugural master of science class at the Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy spent our spring break thinking about community and disaster-related services for vulnerable and affected populations. Instead of swimsuits and beaches, we donned business suits and toured agencies in Washington, D.C.

A spring break trip to Washington, D.C., brought Tulane graduate students in contact with a variety of agencies involved in humanitarian assistance across the globe.

We met with representatives from government agencies, think tanks and nongovernmental groups including FEMA, the U.S. Agency for International Development, State Department, Defense Department, Brookings Institution, International Rescue Committee, International Relief and Development, American Red Cross and the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.

As part of the growing array of participatory learning opportunities available at Tulane, we met industry leaders and learned firsthand how they entered into the field as well as what inspires them today.

While learning about current policy and programmatic debates, we also were able to connect with potential internships.

Following a full-day briefing by program managers and policy area specialists at the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, student Jennifer Hardin said she was very impressed with the diversity of governmental groups involved in humanitarian work.

Student Pauline Zebrowski added, “I was very appreciative of the time the leaders took out of their day to introduce us to their organization and present their role in the humanitarian field."

At the American Red Cross Headquarters, our group spoke to the manager of the newly launched Digital Operations Center to learn how organizations are capturing social media to better direct assistance and communicate during disaster situations. The tour correlated closely with our Crisis Informatics course we are taking this semester.

The trip was led by Ky Luu, executive director of the DRLA, and Sofia Pendley, DRLA program manager.

-April 12, 2012 Andrew Snyder (asnyder3@tulane.edu). Andrew is a candidate for the MS degree in Disaster Resilience Leadership at Tulane.
