The planned statewide tornado drill went on as planned Wednesday morning, despite the snow.

Many students who would have normally taken part in the drill were enjoying the day off from school due to the snow storm.

"I got them out in the snow so that's good,” said Brian Kennedy, who was enjoying a day at Antrim Park in Worthington with his daughters. “That'll get some energy out of them."

Kennedy said even though his daughters missed out on the tornado drill at their school, he is sure they will be prepared when severe weather strikes.

"The schools do a really good job, businesses do a good job. I know at work we were prepared for the drill and everything,” he said.

With snow canceling classes across central Ohio, Grandview Heights and Bexley were the only two school districts in Franklin County that remained open and able to participate in the drill.

"I'm sure the schools will reschedule that because they know how important it is to do these kinds of drills,” said Mike Pannell, Franklin County EMA Director.

Pannell said the drill also allows his crews to make sure the county’s 181 sirens are working. It also allows residents know what they can expect to hear when a tornado warning is issued.

“It kind of gives them some assurance that we're on the job, and that if we do have an actual tornado, they know that we're going to turn them on,” Pannell said.

That message was heard loud and clear on Wednesday.
