I have learned to expect the unexpected living in New York City. The weather seems to change at the drop of a hat, my plans are always in flux, and you never know who you will run into. I find that keeping to the boy scout motto of always being prepared is the only way one can navigate through this busy city.
So, how does one do that? Well, you need the right gear. These days I always have my iPad on me, lots of food, maybe a change of clothes, a notebook, a drink, phone, chargers, and a few odds and ends. For this, I need a durable, fashionable, and comfortable backpack. The Pelican Elite U140 Urban Elite Tablet Backpack is a pretty good fit. Pelican is known for their very sturdy cases, and the Elite U140 is no exception. From the rigid upper handle to the hard shell, this is a bag that screams durability.
But this isn’t just any normal backpack. Yes, it comes with a large opening for your standard belongings and zipper side pocket with a mesh sling for a water bottle, but that is just the beginning. It has two hidden pockets that are up against your back, which are perfect for hiding a wallet, passport, and anything you do not want pickpocketers to get to. There is even a padded lumbar storage cavity that is perfect for a digital SLR camera and lenses.
The coolest compartment, however, is the middle section, which is the heavy duty iPad/netbook/tablet holder. This is a padded and water tight space, that will protect your device from impact, crushing pressure, and water damage (rated for three feet underwater for 30 minutes). This is serious protection we are talking about, with its own easy to open push button latch. I just wish the space was a little bigger. You can not fit a full-size laptop in this case- you can however, purchase the next size up, which can hold your notebook computers. But the Elite U140 is already big ((L x W x D): 19.50 x 13.60 x 11.50 inches) and fairly heavy (6.84 pounds, without anything in it, it can hold up to 18 Liters).
The bag itself feels very sturdy, with great zippers and a balanced rugged grab handle. It is mostly made from nylon, and feels like it can stand some serious rough housing. What is great is that even though it is a hefty bag, the back and shoulders are well padded and the bag is designed with an ergonomic S-curve to make it as comfortable as possible. All that being said, is it worth the $151 price tag? If you are Bruce Wayne, yes, 100%! If you are a city person and are not jumping off buildings regularly, how often do you need a bag like this? If you are the type of person who likes to take all your stuff with you while traveling, this is a nice, safe bag for your valuables. Available now,
