Our artist members are partners in our mission; our work is meant to ensure their visibility and success. WPA is the only artist member organization in the region that offers programming to serve artists at every juncture in their career – from when they first get involved as art students, through their emerging years and even after they become established artists.
WPA’s strength lies in our relentless commitment to the contemporary artist working in the DC Metro region. It is our mission to provide opportunities and resources to artists so that they may achieve more in their artistic practice and go farther in their creative careers than they might without us.

By becoming a WPA member, you are connecting to an extended, creative, vibrant arts community that encourages innovation, impact, and experimentation.
We support artists at all stages of their careers and promote contemporary art by presenting exhibitions, issues, and ideas that stimulate public dialogue on art and culture. WPA regulary presents critically-acclaimed solo and group exhibitions. WPA calls for entry are always FREE to members. Member artists receive a FREE online profile on our new and improved online artist registry, ArtFile Online, have the opportunity to show their work at the annual (e)merge art fair at no cost, and to be included in our bi-annual print Artist Directory.
Professional Development
From its inception, WPA has been an artist service organization. WPA offers many programs on an ongoing basis in our effort to provide meaningful support and career-building opportunities for artists in the region.
Our Professional Practices Series, previously called No Artist Left Behind, offers workshops that provide artists necessary business skills, valuable career and practical advice, and exposure to new skills and techniques that can help them grow or refine their artistic practice. WPA strives to offer information that goes beyond the basics and addresses the needs of artists at every phase of their career. WPA’s Professional Practices workshops are always FREE to WPA members.
Connect + Expand
We provide our members with valuable opportunities to connect to a creative community, gain exclusive access to industry experts, and opportunities and resources so that they may achieve more in their artistic practice and go farther in their creative careers than they might without us.
Attend our diverse artist and curator talks, and immerse yourself in the vibrant regional arts community at our openings, mixers, and other special programs and events. Members gain access to international curators through our ongoing visiting curator review program Information Exchange (InfoEx). By bringing international curators to DC, WPA hopes to initiate challenging conversations and create a forum for artists and curators to engage with each other’s work. WPA’s bi-weekly email newsletter features calls for entry from arts organizations and galleries outside WPA, news and events, as well as a section dedicated exclusively to highlighting and listing the exhibitions, projects and achievements of our members.
