Lutenegger Gives Invited Talk at GeoVirginia Symposium

Dr. Lutenegger recently gave an invited talk to about 220 engineers at the GeoVirginia symposium held on April 28 and 29, 2015 in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. His talk was entitled “Challenges in the Design of Screw-Piles and Helical Anchors in Soils.” The venue included other notable well known geotechnical professionals including Dr. John Schmertmann, Professor Emeritas of the University of Florida, Dr. Harry Poulos, Professor Emeritas of the University of Sydney, Australia and Dr. G. Mesri, Professor of the University of Illinois.

Two Engineering Undergrads Chosen as Rising Researchers

WASHINGTON – The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded a 2014-15 International Fellowship to Arianne Bazilio from Guyana. She is a doctoral candidate in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

AAUW International Fellows are selected for their academic achievement, scholarly promise, and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. They return to their home countries to become leaders in government, academia, community activism, business, and science.

CEE Recognizes Student and Faculty Achievements at Annual Picnic

Dr. Michael Knodler receives the ASCE Faculty Award.

Students, faculty, and staff of the CEE department gathered in the Student Union Ballroom on Friday, April 24 to celebrate recent accomplishments and to salute the graduating class of 2015. Awards were presented to select faculty and undergraduates, honors students presented posters of their research, and student organizations were represented, in particular the American Society of Civil Engineers. ASCE presented their annual student award to Daniel Clasby, and a faculty award to Dr. Michael Knodler. Dr. Knodler was also awarded the CEE Research Award.

UMass Amherst Steel Bridge Team Competes in Regional Competition

The UMass Amherst steel bridge team, led by CEE seniors John Hodgen and Kyle Morose, competed in the Regional Competition sponsored by AISC and hosted at Merrimack College on April 11, 2015. They placed 4th out of 16 regional teams, having the 2nd overall lightest structure and 3rd “most efficient” structure. Peter Quigley, Principal of Weidlinger Associates provided technical mentoring and Gary Visconti owner of Republic Ironworks, Inc. provided steel procurement and fabrication services.
