Professor Andy Carr has been the Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of Worcester College at the University of Oxford since 2001. He was born in Yorkshire and educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bristol University before undertaking surgical training in Sheffield, Oxford, Seattle and Melbourne. He was a research fellow in metabolic medicine with Roger Smith in Oxford and with Bill Cole at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

In 1992 he was appointed as a consultant surgeon in the NHS and established a shoulder surgery service in Oxford where he has led the development and evaluation of arthroscopic surgical techniques and joint replacement. He has trained over twenty specialist shoulder surgeons and is a past President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Society.

He was a Non-Executive Director of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust from 2001-2011 and Divisional Director from 2011-13 when he led the hospital through its merger to become part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He is Head of the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS). In 2002 he founded and now directs the Botnar Research Centre. The department has significantly expanded under his leadership to 350 scientists and 90 post-graduate students, it includes the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology which moved from London to Oxford in 2011.

He is an NIHR Senior Investigator and was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009. His awards include the Robert Jones Gold Medal of the British Orthopaedic Association and a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has been a Trustee of Arthritis Research UK, a consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary and a Curator of the Bodleian Libraries.

From 2008 he has been director of the NIHR Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit in Oxford which focuses on translational research in orthopaedics and rheumatology.

Professor Carr’s research is in the fields of evidence-based medicine, clinical and molecular epidemiology and implant development.

He has promoted the involvement of patients in assessing surgical outcomes and, with colleagues in Oxford, developed a range of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) for orthopaedics. The Oxford Scores have been translated into 20 languages and are now used worldwide. Recently he has focused on understanding the role of placebo controls in surgery and has led a number of large scale randomized clinical trials.

He was a group head at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford in the 1990’s and has collaborated with other groups in the UK and Europe in the discovery of a number of key genetic loci involved in osteoarthritis. He pioneered the use of patients and families who have undergone joint replacement surgery in these studies.

In the 1990’s he worked with John Goodfellow and John O’Connor during the early development of the Oxford Knee, (Biomet PLC), as a partial knee replacement, it has now been implanted in over a million patients worldwide. He also developed a partial shoulder replacement with Corin PLC (the Oxford Shoulder).

The Oxford Scores and the Oxford Knee were two of the 4* impact statements submitted by the University of Oxford in the REF 2014.

He is currently developing biomaterials that aim to enhance endogenous tissue repair using biophysical cues without the need for growth factors or cells. His group use electrospinning to manufacture novel suture materials (Bioyarn) and surgical meshes (Biopatch).
