What is fracking?
An ecology company called Arbtech just made an infographic about fracking. It should provide a useful resource for people wanting to know more about fracking. They also have it chopped up into the different sections if you’d prefer to only use part of it.

Fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing,(unconventional gas extraction) this is a highly industrial process involving pumping a mix of water, sand and chemicals under huge pressure into gas bearing rock.

Information movie about hydraulic fracturing by a company
Hydraulic fracturing, is a process known as fracking. It is a controversial way to extract natural gas that is trapped in shale rock, a couple of miles underground.
Shale and gas
- Gas can be found deep into the earth, in a well or in rocks.
- Shale is a type of rock with thin layers of clay or mud.
- Shale often contains both free and absorbed gas.
- Shale gas is a so called “unconventional” source of natural gas.

- Vertical drilling to shale layer; 6,000ft is over a mile, over 2,5 km
- At shale layer, the drill turns and moves horizontally.
- The drill is removed and a steel pipe pushed down the shaft.
- Cement is poured around the pipe to act as barrier.
- Small explosions are set off in the shale layer, fracturing it.
- Water + sand + chemicals are pumped in at high pressure to enlarge the cracks and release the gas.
- Waste water will be reused and stored in open basins
- Gas will be transported in pipe line
