I love the plastc bag ban and the new bike lanes!
I support these things.
I support these things.
Re the bag ban: It's a GOOD thing to care about the planet, but I have heard so many negative comments from clerks and customers alike. I wish someone would post a giant billboard of the Pacfic garbage gyre in the downtown area to show where the millions of plastic bags end up. Maybe MAYBE then people would start to see the value of reclyclable shopping bags.
I love the bag ban too. It has convinced my husband not to shop at Randalls--we now go only to the HEB in Westlake.
Unfortunately, what you seem to be overlooking is that it is NOT just a "plastic" bag ban, but also the nice paper bags that used to be an option at the checkout counter. I always asked for "paper" when offered the choice between paper and plastic bags, and now have had that choice taken away from me by an overreaching and paternalistic city council.
Bridgejumper,
I didn't know it was paper too! I've been reusing bags for years now so I didn't even notice. I appreciate your distaste for overreaching government, and I hope that you can endure these harsh conditions, but this city needs some tough love. I'm thrilled about it and wanted city council to know what I thought, because the reaction has been mostly negative. Like bringing a bag to the store is some impossible thing to do, or there is some shortage of bags in this world. Who doesn't have a big pile of bags laying around? It only takes a small bit of effort and imagination.

yeap look at what Austin has done it is not the Cizean it is the Calf Law because the plastc bag ban was start in San Fran Ca so look aging who is living in Austin and runing our town and destroying our rights to live in a dump and all they are doing is catoring to the people who is Rich and we get stuck with the paper bags
My tax money will go to another community where I am given a choice
I support the plastic bag ban! These bags are so harmful to our enviornment and wildlife. The benefit of the ban far outweighs the inconveniance.
The new bike lane on Guadalupe is great.
I could not agree more! I love the bag ban and City Council taking bold moves like this is one of the reasons that I LOVE Austin. If people want to leave so they have a "choice" about what type of bag they use, as far as I'm concerned, that is fine. The kind of community I want to live in has people who care about the environment and the future, not just their own "convenience". And I say convenience like that, because I don't think it will be very convenient when humans have made the planet unihabitable for future generations. I appreciate living in a community that takes the future seriously!
bag bans, back in angled parking, too many unimportant things instead of fixing city streets, Guadalupe and Lavaca are full of potholes, but , hey, I guess no plastic bags will be seen on those streets due to the bag ban.
LOVE the bag ban and I am hoping the surrounding suburbs (especially Round Rock) will follow suit! Hoping Austin will do even more to make each consumer more eco-friendly!
I hate the bag ban.. and so do many others. boo
