It would be great if there was a really nice line of trees planted along chapman rd north of the marina. The walking path lacks shade and the roots of the trees may help in the long term to stabilise the beach there. The trees will need to be fenced, watered and protected from vandals.

No fresh water drinking facility exists at the lighthouse or Seperation pt. Please install a water fountain at these places. The fountain will need to be protected from vandals, not the same style as the ones along the foreshore which block up with bird poo. thanks

We want more regular (quarterly?) forums to get together with people developing proposals for civic evolution and other forms of government support: like the Big Ideas festival, but without the big expense.

A bunch of us are thinking we should organise some events that combine:

• inspiring videos, case studies, ‘tools’, tips and resources in a well-facilitated forum

• that make links between private, government and non-profit sectors, for better outcomes,

• that use some system of sharing resources and contacts that means we ‘help ourselves’ rather than just depending on the City or others.

• And, that result in more of our ideas happening, leading to a better Geraldton.

This proposal is to get your ideas and support about how this could happen, and to get the support of the City and Governance Alliance.

The preservation of the Moresby Ranges for future generations of Western Australians is an essential part of the creation of a sustainable living landscape for Geraldton and the Mid West.This can be achieved by a balanced approach of ecological management, not for profit business alliances, interactive landowners participation and pro-active administration through Local and State Government. Opportunities exist to develop partnerships with major resource companies involved with Oakajee and beyond, renewable energy providers, environmental agencies as well as philanthropic parties.

Our forefathers had the vision to create Kings Park and we have a similar opportunity to emulate their forsight if we act now and preserve the Morseby Ranges for public open space.

Coxswains park is an under utilised public space, that could be developed to become a central community space for Point Moore. 1. Natural playground: As the number of children and grand-children around point moore increase, a nice natural playground with plenty of shade should be one of the point of focus. 2. Community herbs and veggies garden: Establishing a community garden will have many advantages. Strenghtening the community feeling of point moore, creating a inter-generation activity, promoting well being and active life, encouraging healthy eating, sharing knowledge and much more. If like us, you love living in or coming to Point Moore and feel this park will be so much more than a square of yellowish grass, then join in and help us move this project forward, all together we can make it happen!

I would love to see the Greenough River re vegitated, we have lost a lot of it in the past couple of years or so, to gether with a loss of wild life.I think a botanic garden would be a sustainable Ideal in this location of the mid west.

The NBN will have significant impacts to the local community. Suggest a Multimedia event streamed to the world showcasing Geraldton, engaging artists, businesses, community groups and schools to produce a multimedia festival. Also screened within the city in public with interviews with local goverment, bussiness and community groups. Could be a 24 hr event coinciding with the start date of NBN in Geraldton. Great to have media and TV coverage and show Geraldton as a leading community.

Concept is to build on a crown reserve near public transport a multistorey building out of refurbished shipping container units to provide accomodation for Geraldton region based students studying in Perth.

In return for lower rents the students living there would work on a roster in the "Geraldton Embassy & Trade Office" where they would hope promote Geraldton tourism and investment opportunities and also sell Geraldton regional produce, products and services.

What is a botanical garden?

A botanic Garden is not a park like Araluen Park.

A botanic Garden in not a national park like Kalbarri

A Botanic Garden

1. is a collection of plants (local and / or exotic species)

2. is used for recreation, education and research

3. is scientifically ordered and plants are labelled

4. can provide business opportunities

5. might have connections with national parks

6. has a different function, focus and managment compared to other types of parks.

So in summary, Geraldton Greenough needs a botanical Park and the citizens need a vision of this Park, let us get started. Please contact me or put up your vision.

To create an annual festival for the Mid West Region that is family focused and appeals to all generations. The festival will be held in a rural setting at Nukara Farm in the Chapman Valley and will comprise of a weekend of bush themed projects and a family camp out. This festival is to encourage the building of healthy family relationships and for them to reconnect with the outdoors.

On Saturday there will be a series of bush art workshops, bush poetry and bush oven cookoffs by local multi-cultural chefs, using only fresh locally grown produce for the evening meal. Two Bush Bands will perform an interactive, energetic evening of bush dancing for all the family.

We will be advertising this event to surrounding rural communities, the Grey Nomads website, visitors centres and our local community. This is an opportunity to showcase the Midwest Region. We are currently seeking grant funding for this festival to ensure it is an affordable family event.

Geraldton appears to be particularly reliant upon transporting food from other areas into town. While the local Growers market has been a fantastic improvement both in quality, freshness and fewer transport miles, We need to do more to secure our community's food needs into the future, both as a form of community resilience, and for improved health and wellbeing of people and planet. I would like to look at other ways of promoting local produce for example in our locally owned supermarkets, neighbourhood garden and verge projects, parks and shared spaces.

Small organisations, start-up entrepreneurs and visiting consultants and trainers are all screaming out for workspace in central Geraldton that is affordable, professional, and creative- a bunch of volunteers are working hard to make it happen as soon as possible. In fact, we want it up and running by late 2011 and have a great relationship with the owner of a Heritage building on Marine Terrace that would be just perfect.

The plan is to run the space as a ‘social enterprise’ (makes profit, then re-invests it in the facility and support for start-up organisations) providing a full-service office at flexible rates, meeting and workshop facilities, enterprise incubation services, entrepreneurship programs and regular networking and learning sessions. This space would become the ‘home’ for emerging entrepreneurs and the sort of diverse, sustainable projects, ideas and businesses that will be essential to Geraldton’s vision for the future.For more information, visit www.cityhive.org

Geraldton's Front/Town Beaches have a long history of being used for public 'bathing'. With the development of our now showcase foreshore and a returned use of this area for recreational and sports swimming, the time is now ripe for us to build some ocean baths.

These baths could entail a toddler friendly wading area, an Olympic-sized pool for lap-swimming and general-use pool.

Such structures are common and well utilised on the East Coast.

The water at along the foreshore is high quality and such facilities as ocean baths not only go a long way to enabling an active and healthy community but also ensure we value and maintain our precious natural assets.

This is a design idea for new housing developments for families: homes (maybe 12) with shared connecting walls would enclose a backyard featuring natural playgrounds.

The total amount of land required would be much less than typical suburban family homes and the children would enjoy a superior playground on their doorstep, with plenty of children to play with, safe from traffic, without waiting until parents can take them to a public park.

Each family could still have a small private front garden.

I have been drawing possible designs, my favourite so far is octagonal.

A group of volunteers have started an online ride-sharing group called ‘Geraldton Community’ group using the Pick-up Pal software. We think it is way to cut fuel costs and improve safety on journeys between destinations like Geraldton and Perth. We already have more than 25 members, have saved an estimated $1000 in fuel costs and more than 1700kg in carbon emissions through ridesharing since the group was established in November 2010. Now, we want to promote the service more widely AND get government agencies and large organisations to use the service.We all know that amongst all us locals we are making hundreds of car trips per week between Geraldton and Perth, Geraldton and Mullewa, and even commuting to Dongara etc. In all these cases it makes economic and environmental sense to rideshare. The chapman river walk is beautiful ( especially in spring) but not well known or utilised. Maintenance ( mowing of paths), another foot bridge crossing between the two existing, a sign at spalding clearly showing walks available and Km/ time needed and interprtive signage outlining the flora, fauna, indigenous heritage and significance of the river would provide another point of interest for visitors and locals alike. Seating/ pinic tables along the walk may also be good, with possibly more revegetaion of the area in addition to previous works undertaken. I love this walk! People need places of beauty in nature to "escape" to, and this is one of our crown jewels. Yes, we have great coast, but little natural bushland publicly available for people to enjoy. Any other natural treasures out there that could be made more user friendly?

Set aside an area of the CBD that are for small retail only so no big multiples can come in and dominate. This will make the area a vibrant shopping space full of variety that will attract visitors and locals alike. Coming in for the unique offering and vibe it creates with cafes, galleries and the like at its heart. It will also help the artisans in Geraldton make a living from their craft as shops will be smaller and geared towards them.

This works in Europe where certain towns are renowned for their shopping experience as they are so unique. I think the West End of Marine Terrace from Cathedral Ave towards the point is perfect for this as it already has this starting but we must stop KMart or some other national from building a shopping centre and smothering the area. Let the big shopping centres be out of the CBD

How about a tram line going from the CBD north and South. The Northbound could go out Chapman Road and along the coast past the Bluff point area and curve back before the Chapman river to run along Chapman road again all the way to Drummonds. The South bound could run up Francis, then along Willock Drive, in front of African Reef to link up with Glendinning Road before heading across the highway and up into Seacrest.

It would be a bit like the old Perth Fremantle line in that it would create great hubs at each station and like the Melbourne Trams it wouldnt need a dedicated track for the most part as it could share the roads. It would provide a great link between the areas of Geraldton and a tourist attraction at the same time as the views would be wonderful. It would also allow tourists to get around without their cars and the kids to go to and from town without the confusion of the bus routes.

There's no doubt the Light house in Point Moore is an icon of our city. Its prime location and elevation give it a strong touristic potential. We could have and a local tourism operator showing tourists the great views of the Indian Ocean and of our city from up there. This could be coupled with some words on the history of Geraldton as well as the shipwrecks in the area. The tourism information centre would provide information on this service.

Investigate innovative ideas, drawing on best practice from other Councils, with a view to introducing recycling to the Midwest without the rate payer having to bear significant cost. Please sign up if you'd like to be enabled as a citizen of Geraldton to be a responsible waste manager and contribute to the environmental movement. We've got some big ideas for the future, let's add to these a wonderful story of how Geraldton overcame some of the regional obstacles that precluded it from participating in the recycling movement. How satisfying it will be to know that recyclable packaging will actually be recycled, and that the end of the supply chain in Geraldton will be the beginning of another!

The Bike Hubbub is about sharing tools, tips and expertise within the Geraldton cycling community. Currently Bike Hubbub has supported: an online forum for sharing resources, a 2 hour workshop on bike repairs with 17 participants, and a pilot program of bi-weekly bike repair sessions with tools and mechanics available. All activities are free, delivered through volunteers, and the tools and space for repairs and storage have been donated by a member. Based on demand and opportunities, the Bike Hubbub intends to continue the bi-weekly program, and expand into more formal programs at perhaps a more central location, with the support of partners, sponsors and funders. The intention of the Bike Hubbub is to reduce the barriers to more people cycling safely and confidently in Geraldton, and to grow a cycling culture for health, environmental, economic and social benefits. Now that we are not pursuing a kerbside recycling scenario, why don't we look recovering our household organics and creating a compost product from all our food and greenwaste that can on-sold to residents and agriculture landowners alike in order to completely close the loop?

Essentially, residents gather all their kitchen waste in specially designed, compostable Biobags which are then placed into a separate, 240lt organics stream wheelie bin that also contains all the household Greenwaste. This combined food and garden-waste bin is then collected and sorted at the Landfill to remove any contaminants. It is then sprayed with a microbial composting solution, similar to the type used in a Bokashi Bucket, heaped into a pile and covered with plastic.

After a period of time, the end product is a high quality, microbially active compost that will be of major benefit for improving residential and agricultural soils with a contamination level of just 0.0764%.

Western Australia has less than 1percent of marine area protected. We would love to see Point Moore from Pages to Greys beach become a marine sanctuary. Currently Point Moore is a diving and snorkelling area that is being threatened by recreational fishing. Geraldton is trying to change its image from “a pass through town” to “take a fresh look”. We believe a Marine Sanctuary would increase tourism and have Geraldton as a destination rather than a ‘’pass through town’’ The benefits of this are numerous, positive and ongoing; environmental, tourism, economic, education, employment, enterprise, training, improved local fishing, culture, history and heritage.

Currently there is no common architecture that is characteristic of Geraldton. I suggest that the City and the design / building industry combine to put up a $10000 - $20 000 prize for architects, artists, the community to define a "geraldton architecture".

Factors that could be included are referencing historic precedents - Aboriginal, Noonan, Hawes, Federation; landscape context - coast, farmland, Moresby's; environmental context - wind, sun, cool winters etc.

Also this could include a design language for houses, group houses, industrial etc. There could also be a different language for locations e.g. coast, hills etc

All the entries from the competition could be put up in a public space for the community to vote upon. In addition they could also be judged by an expert panel who would be required to explain IN DETAIL, why they picked their winner.

This result could input to the the City's new Town Planning Scheme

GGFM along with other community discussed concept at the 2029 discussion days in August 2011. The local park provides an ideal location that could provide gazebo structures with power & water & also upgrade the skate park to improve its use this would need to be done in consulation with youth whom use the area.

During the Sunshine Festival several community people discussed the concept.

Sustainability will require a shift in culture, towards more collective values, more resilient social networks, and people who are happier because they feel 'connected', like they 'belong'.

This idea is to improve the availability and interactivity of information about community events in the 'real world'. The proposal is to use some of the under-utilised space in the Marine Terrace mall to host a beautiful community noticeboard that is updated weekly. This could lead to the mall being more of a 'community' space rather than purely commercial.

The City could hold competitions on facebook with prizes as incentives, to answer questions that required reading and searching text to obtain answers. The questions could be framed to educate and increase awareness of various issues, targeted at increasing participation by community in City initiatives. Issues could include local government (who are the councillors, questions on local laws, or local projects), Indigenous culture, state government, parliamentary processes, etc.

An idea from the World Cafes was to establish an official Youth Council with a structure and function similar to that of the actual City Council. This is to give youth a voice in strategic decision making.

Regular transportation link between Mullewa and Geraldton, via a shuttle bus service.

The need for this project was identified through a community consultation in Mullewa conducted by the Midwest GP Network and Population Health Midwest. The community welcomes any opportunity for additional community forums to discuss this proposal.

The rational of this initiative is that many community members in Mullewa do not have vehicles or drivers licences to travel to Geraldton for their health and social needs. This lack of access results in frustration and aggression among the community.

If implemented, this initiative has potential to bring positive physical, social and mental health outcomes for Mullewa residents.

Currently community attitude towards the pet 'friendliness' of the City of Geraldton-Greenough is negative to say the least. As a regional town, most people living in the area have a pet. Providing a more pet friendly city would encourage people to get out, exercise, socialise and enjoy the city.

What I am proposing is to lift the restrictions on dogs on the Foreshore, Marina and other inner city areas. Dogs are to be on lead, and clean up bags should be provided. In addition to this, any drinking fountains should have a lower 'water bowl' attachment added. City cafe's and restaurants should be allowed to provide water in outside areas without fear of retribution from health inspectors. The city should look into the possibility of allowing pets on public transport.

Dog parks should be built in the main suburban parks. Dog parks are smaller fenced off, double gated areas (with clean up bags), where owners and pets can congregate safely, allowing pets to play and owners to socialise.

Many visitors to the Mid West travel by vans or campers and do not utilise caravan parks. Whilst we have voluntary fees at Ellendale Pool, which is well used by older campers, there is nowhere in the town that people can use. The Rangers are forced to move them on from various beach parking bays. Why not somewhere like Point Moore for a voluntary, short term camping spot?

Develop a contemporary HR Plan for the City addressing key strategic issues whilst ensuring that we maintain a dynamic and resourceful workforce, engaged and committed to the ideals and vision of the organisation. We want a workforce that is committed to best practice, well qualified in their fields of expertise, committed to innovation and an organisation that is prepared to acknowledge the need to have a work - life balance.

The Plan will need to be addressing obvioulsy current minimum standards of employment and related HR legislation that will be worked through future revisions of the City's Collective Agreements.

The aim of the Plan will need to provide prospective and current employees an understanding of the values of the organisation and the ultmate desire that the City is an employer of choice.

This event is aimed at getting national publicity to promote the Islands and Geraldton along similar lines to What Swim Across Australia did in 2004.The swim would be times to tie in with a particular event in Geraldton ie Opening of the cray season etc.Teams would comprise of up to 10 swimmers per boat.This would be the biggest open ocean swim in Australia ( as far as I know ).

Teams race that raises money for the the Flying Doctor and Cancer Research.

5 person teams 1 person swim leg, 1 person cycle, 1 person runs, 1 person sea kayak, 1 person horse ride.

Starting at the Marina the swim leg takes swimmers to the Stow Gardens beach, cycle leg follows to via walkaway Greenough Central, Horse leg takes over to Flat rocks and then back along the dunes to Greenough River Mouth, Sea kayak leg from River mouth to Point Moore with the final leg being a run leg from Point MOOre to the finishing line at the Museum on the Boardwalk.

Could become major event with competitors coming from through Australia.

Resources of Rotary, Sea Rescue, Lifesaving,Pony Club and others to be involved. Documentary can be made for national and international release.

Major regaional event can become annual and be a icon event for this region.

To implement a bus service that will collect workers from bus stops to take to their respective work locations beginning with the city workers and to collect them (from bus stops) to take them home. Currently no such service exists.

A bus service for the workers in the city would reduce the use of single person cars on our roads and in our central carparks. The simple and immediate benefits are: less toxic emissions, more carpark space and less cost to the user as a second car could possibly be eliminated.

I hope to see bus services to other work places like Narngalu, and Oakajee in the future,and maybe a free shuttle bus for city shoppers.

We keep hearing the people say we don't have enough carparks so lets get rid of the cars!

Lets allow more people into the city area to shop by bussing them around. We can do this!!

A Tree planting Program for Shade for the Future , with the weather getting hotter and people expected to use cars less there has to be somewhere to take a rest it would also create a family friendly area were people are able to sit under for a picnic or park under etc ..the trees would have to be big enough to be able to survive long enough to become Large shady trees , like the Vandals and other things that are usually done to them
