Men and women wanted for hazardous journey.

Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.

spacer AdGrok (adgrok.com), a Y Combinator startup, is looking for its first non-founder employee1.

We just closed a seed round with some distinguished angel investors, have plenty of money in the bank, and are ready to build a company. This isn’t some BS social media thing that injects dancing pigs into your Facebook newsfeed. We’re taking a $50 billion market and changing the way business is done.

Us: One of us ran with the bulls in Pamplona. One of us still anchors a DJ spot on Stanford’s student radio. One of us likes sailing small boats alone on the open ocean. We’re all technical. We all sell. We all do user support.

spacer We’ve got offices at SOMACentral (153 Townsend in San Francisco), a startup space housing 30-odd startups, including about 8 startups from the current Y Combinator batch. It’s a cool atmosphere full of interesting people doing great things.

Do not however be deceived by apparent respectability or swank digs. In our early Y Combinator days we went through two cases of beer a week and slept on bare mattresses in a dump of an apartment. We also shipped the world’s best search marketing tool in two months (and we mean from empty text buffer to production launch).

spacer Things we do daily:

  • Ship new features
  • Talk to customers about how to make the product better

You:

  • You must have a passion for building something people want.
  • You want to have a say in what gets built next, and how it gets built.
  • You’re experienced enough to know that there is always more than one way to do it, and humble enough to know that how you’re doing something may very well not be the best way to do it.
  • Your passion for getting the right thing done at the right time is bigger than your ego.
  • You know that in a startup, everyone is as much an “architect” as they are a “janitor.”

Things you should enjoy:

  • Ruby/Rails
  • MySQL
  • Javascript/jQuery

Things you should know, or enjoy learning about on the job:

  • Statistics and machine learning
  • Search and social media marketing
  • James Brown

As employee number four, you’ll get paid a competitive salary and a significant equity chunk. Healthcare, paid lunches, and whatever development tools you need are part of the package.

Forget working for Google or Facebook.

Why join the navy, when you can come be a pirate like us?

Interview Q1 : Steve Jobs spacer Right ?

  • www.samjackson.org Sam Jackson

I love it! Unfortunately, I don’t have the technical chops to apply, plus I just accepted another job in NY (details, details), but I really love the ethos. Keep it coming, adgrok – I’ve enjoyed watching you develop and look forward to the disruptive innovation that I am sure will continue.

  • Chris

    Women need not apply then?

  • adgrok.com Matthew

    Very likely a prior incarnation.

  • bob

    @Chris Read the footnote.

  • Number C

You guys want on-site only applicants?

  • adgrok.com Matthew

Yeah, sorry, at this point, we’re looking for people that are either local already or people willing to move.

  • Robert

Are we to assume that you stock only seal blubber and dog meat in your kitchen, then? spacer

  • adgrok.com Matthew

And a yogurt, some granola, and some low-fat milk.

  • admin

    Well, and beer.

  • adgrok.com Matthew

Feh! Beer is only a myth. I only see the empty cases. Never the liquid.
