With the toy on one hand and a treat on the other hand, throw the toy away, make sure it’s within your reach, and have the dog pounce or jump on them. Make them get the toy and bring them to you. Slowly grab the toy from his mouth and give them a treat or a pat when they let go. Do the same thing again, throwing the toy at a longer distance.
  • Down. With your dog standing, hold a treat on your hand and move your hand straight down onto the ground. Your dog should follow your hand down and when its belly hits the ground, give them the tasty treat. Do the same action again and again with a verbal command, such as “down”, “lay”, and “drop”.

Some other obedience training commands that you can do include teaching them how to stand, heel, follow, ‘come’ or ‘recall’ commands, ‘leave it’ commands, and ‘go to your spot’ commands.

Excessive barking

A common behavioral problem among dogs, excessive barking can be corrected by identifying the cause of the behavior. There are many reasons why they bark. A dog barking may want something and demand your attention. Dogs may also bark whenever they see or hear something unusual. One way to correct barking problems is to ignore your dogs. Once they stop barking, reward them by giving them treats or scratching their back and ears.

Food aggression

This is another common behavioral problem in dogs. Dogs tend to get aggressive about their food especially if owners failed to establish a feeding routine. Because dogs don’t know when they will get the next food, they become more protective about their food. As soon as they settle down, reward them with a scratch behind their ears or give them a dog treat.

Urinating due to excitement

An action that cannot be controlled by dogs, excitement urination happens every time the owner or a family member comes home. To train dogs out of this behavior, avoid petting them as soon as you arrive home but verbally acknowledge them with a calm tone of voice. In such situations, using an excited voice is not recommended as this will only send their level of excitement through the roof. As soon as their level of excitement has gone down, usually after five to ten minutes, you can then start petting your dog and scratching them behind their ears to let them know you’re happy to see them. Some dogs also urinate every time you bend over them, either to scratch their ears or pet them. Kneeling down is more recommended than bending over them.

Knowing these rules does not just entail effective training but also make the process a whole lot easier.
