SNTV Books Into 2016 Summer Games – Opens Rio Bureau

spacer
SNTV, the joint venture between IMG Media and The Associated Press, has announced it will open a new bureau in Rio de Janeiro.
The sports video news agency will locate its new bureau at AP’s office, as the city readies itself for the 2016 Summer Games, a major event in the country’s sporting history.
Martin Kay, managing director of SNTV, said: “Rio de Janeiro will consistently provide the biggest news stories in sport in the run-up to the next Olympic Games so it is essential that we have a presence on the ground as the stories break. Opening the Rio bureau will make sure we continue providing the unrivalled sports news service that our customers expect.”
Ahead of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Games in 2016, the city will also welcome the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, as well as the Soccerex Global Convention later this year and the Sportel Rio conference, the international sports programme market for television and new media, in March 2013.

The Rio de Janeiro bureau will be the fourth permanent location SNTV has outside London. Its other offices are in New York, Beijing and Singapore.

Founded in 1996, SNTV has become an indispensable service for more than 400 international broadcasters. In January, the company became the first and only sports news agency to operate in high definition.

ITN Source Supplies Archive Content For BBC 1960s Cinemas Project

spacer
BBC FOUR has commissioned a 20-part series called ‘Britain on Film’ that will use archive footage from over 500 Rank Organisation cinema documentary films to give modern audiences a new visual perspective on the 1960s.

ITN Source, the footage licensing division of ITN, is supplying ten hours of archive to BBC Scotland, which is producing the series. The content is entirely sourced from Rank’s ‘Look at Life’ series, which was shown in Odeon and Gaumont cinemas from 1959 until 1969. The vast majority of this footage has never been seen on television before.
The original footage is taken from 35mm colour reels, with ITN Source restoring some content that had deteriorated over time. The series is Executive Produced by David Okuefuna and is commissioned by the Controller of BBC FOUR, Richard Klein.

“After I was approached by ITN Source, who alerted me to the vast spread of the Look at Life series, I realised there was a wealth of content to bring the sixties to life,” said David Okuefuna, Executive Director of Britain on Film. “The films shine a light on every element of the decade, not just the ‘swinging sixties’ stereotype. We hope this series will be a richly enjoyable trip down memory lane for some – and a window on an unfamiliar world for others.”
The scheduling of Britain on Film has yet to be finalised, but the first run of films are expected to appear on BBC FOUR between now and March 2013. Further details will follow in due course.

Is Content More Valuable Than Distribution?

“How many of you think content is more valuable than distribution? How about the other way around?
It’s an age old debate. What’s really the difference? Audience.
One has an audience- the other owns it. You need to be in the audience business and that’s what I’m going to talk about today….”

Launched: AP New Footage Archive Platform – Subscription Available

spacer
The Associated Press has unveiled a new video archive platform to support the full-scale expansion of its stock footage business. The new platform will give new and existing customers improved access to AP’s vast historical archive allowing online downloads and licensing of footage, while offering a range of new specialist features to enable customers to search, organize and share research. In addition to supporting the traditional “a la carte” pricing model, the new platform will offer a subscription service.
“AP’s footage revenues have grown steadily in recent years with sales in 2011 growing by 27 percent. The overall market for online video news across Europe and Asia is predicted to grow annually by up to 13 percent and 16 percent, respectively, and AP sees a great opportunity for archive footage within these sectors,” said Alwyn Lindsey, director of AP video archive. “We believe the digital expansion of our footage business will allow us to better service existing customers and better target new market segments. This includes digital publishers who are looking for quick and easy access to richer video footage to engage their audiences.”

Footage Archive Awarded Heritage Lottery Fund Grant

spacer spacer
The Shetland Moving Image Archive Group has been awarded a grant of £25,200 from the (UK) Heritage Lottery Fund.
The grant, along with sums raised from film screenings and a raffle, plus a matching sum from LEADER, is for phase one of the Shetland Film Archive development project.
The funds will be used to employ a Development Officer to compile a detailed plan and secure funding to establish a film archive in Shetland, as well as to deliver more local film screenings, catalogue old films, train volunteers, develop the website and establish a network of local access points where people can view digitised copies of old films of Shetland. The project hopes to begin the recruitment process in the autumn.

Archivist Brian Smith of Shetland Amenity Trust Archives Service commented “We at the Archives Service are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting this important project. Old films are unique records of people, pass-times, events and activities from our past. It is important that we work to preserve as many of these records as possible, and make them available for viewing and studying now and in the future.”
Colin McLean, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland, said: “This is an exciting project driven by Shetland’s local residents. It demonstrates how our heritage can be a living part of a community bringing people together to learn from and enjoy their shared identity. We are delighted to be giving this worthwhile venture our full support.”
