Introducing ASU's "Hazard Hero"
Help identify and eliminate or minimize hazards.

spacer As part of North Carolina’s Injury Prevention Hazard Recognition Program, we want all ASU employees to identify and report hazards in the workplace, wherever they are found.

As a “Hazard Hero”, finding and reporting unsafe conditions and other hazards, along with the corrective action taken, will hopefully help to keep ourselves and our coworkers safe.

Be a “Hazard Hero”.  If you have found an unsafe condition or any other hazard, click the “Hazard Hero” to take you to the “ASU HAZARD HERO REPORT”.  It’s designed to assist you in reporting hazards.  Just complete the form and click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the form.  Your report will go directly to EHS&EM personnel and we’ll check it out.  For more Information, contact Ronnie Riddle, ASU Occupational Safety Manager by email ( riddlere@appstate.edu ) or by phone at 828-262-7649.

Click ASU's "Hazard Hero" to report a hazard.

Think more. Risk less. Help us identify safety and health concerns on campus

The Office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for all faculty, staff, students and visitors to the campus.  To help us provide this environment, we now offer a web form by which you may report any safety or health concerns to our office.

If you do not want your identity to be known, then do not type your name, email address and telephone number in the OPTIONAL spaces provided in the form.  However, please be advised that the IP address of the computer you are using to submit the form will be known. Even so, the IP address will be kept in confidence.

Click here to access the safety and health concern form.

Appalachian's Office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management

Welcome to Appalachian’s Office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management (EHS&EM). Our mission is to promote healthy, safe, and resilient operations on campus, to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors, and to protect the environment. Our vision is to increase resiliency and preserve the Appalachian mission as a recognized campus leader and resource for environmental health, safety, and emergency management. Our office is committed to the following values in all that we do:

  • Accountability
  • Leadership
  • Collaboration
  • Stewardship and Compliance
  • Open Communication

Our professional staff provides training, area assessments, inspections, and reports that support all university departments while reducing institutional liability and risk. While the University must comply with the expectations of numerous governing and regulatory agencies, we believe that we can find compliance while placing people and environment first. The people and environment model enables us to look at the root cause of risk and recommend or require appropriate controls rather than simply seeking to reach code compliance. Code compliance is often the result of thinking more and managing or reducing risk. We also maintain a people and environment first model to our emergency preparedness and management programs.

Whether you work with EHS&EM regularly, or have never met any of our team, we hope that we can help you take the lead in your area. Please take some time to explore our site, ask questions, and let us know if you need anything at any time. If you would like to visit EHS&EM’s emergency preparedness page, please click here.

Together, as a university, we can think more to risk less.

Please be patient as we update our site

We hope to make this site a valuable resource for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and those around the world who visit our site. Over the coming months we will make changes to the menu and format of our site with the hope that you will access the resources you need. If you have any suggestions for topical organization or format of this page, please email us and let us know.
