Editorial Team

The UXmatters Editorial Team is responsible for

  • determining the editorial focus and policies of UXmatters
  • creating content that is consistent with the magazine’s goals and image and appeals to our target audience
  • developing content to ensure an adequate flow of high-quality article submissions
  • define any focus and determining the content of each monthly issue
  • contributing ideas for columns and articles
  • ensuring the consistent and proper use of the English language

Editors who are responsible for developmental editing—such as the Executive Editor and most Associate Editors—must be knowledgeable in one or more aspects of user experience (UX) in addition to having editorial skills. However, editors who are responsible for copy editing need not have any background in user experience. Publications skills are paramount for the Managing Editor and Copy Editors.

Note—The following are descriptions of the roles and responsibilities that members of the UXmatters Editorial Team must cover. Because UXmatters has a small, all volunteer staff, it is likely that, in most cases, individual staff members may cover multiple roles and their related responsibilities. By defining roles and responsibilities in this way, we can achieve maximal flexibility and adaptability to the skills, interests, and schedules of our individual staff members.

Executive Editor

The Executive Editor works closely and collaboratively with the Editor in Chief to

  • establish and document editorial policies, processes, and guidelines
  • develop style guidelines for authors and documenting them in the UXmatters Guidelines for Style and Usage
  • define any focus and determine the content of each monthly issue
  • plan and develop occasional series or special features

The Executive Editor is responsible for

  • managing the team of Associate Editors and, thus, content development
  • working closely with Contributing Editors in developing special issues
  • overseeing all aspects of planning, editing, and production for all issues of UXmatters
  • working closely with the Managing Editor and Production Manager to produce all issues
  • working with the Managing Editor to set deadlines and maintain the editorial calendar
  • reviewing article proposals that prospective authors have submitted and assigning them to the appropriate Associate Editors
  • approving writing assignments
  • requesting the Art Director to provide logos, graphic images, photographs, and charts
  • reviewing all content authors submit for
    • the quality and relevance of the information it provides
    • structure and flow
    • clarity and conciseness
    • legal and ethical issues
  • reviewing all images that graphic artists and photographers submit
  • accepting content for submission to copy editing, returning it to the author for further work, or rejecting it
  • writing titles for columns, articles, interviews, and reviews
  • selecting pull quotes for each article
  • designating topic categories for all articles
  • serving as a liaison between cross-functional teams
  • maintaining an archive of all content submissions on CD-ROM

Associate Editors

Each Associate Editor is responsible for developing a particular type of content. Associate Editors include

  • Contributing Editors—who develop columns, features, and special issues about specific aspects of user experience
  • Columns Editor—who develops columns
  • Features Editor—who develops feature articles
  • Interviews Editor—who develops interviews with people in user experience
  • Product Review Editor—who develops reviews of products that are of interest to user experience professionals, including hardware, software, Web site, book, service, conference, and tutorial reviews
  • News Editor—who develops news reports about user experience

All Associate Editors are responsible for

  • recruiting authors
  • reviewing article proposals that prospective authors have submitted online
  • working with authors to develop their article proposals
  • contributing article ideas
  • planning and developing occasional series or special features
  • setting deadlines and maintaining the editorial calendar
  • reviewing content and images
  • providing feedback and constructive comments to their authors, graphic artists, and photographers
  • writing titles

UXmatters Contributing Editors must work in and have in-depth knowledge of one or more aspects of user experience (UX). They regularly contribute columns or articles themselves covering specific areas of expertise in user experience. Within each area of expertise, the responsible Contributing Editor

  • develops ideas for articles
  • recruits columnists and authors to contribute columns and articles, respectively
  • assists columnists and authors in developing content for UXmatters
  • ensures that UXmatters reflects current trends and stays on top of the latest developments

A Contributing Editor with expertise in some specific aspect of user experience can lead content development for a special issue covering that professional specialty. All articles in such a special issue would focus on that specialty. When developing a special issue, a Contributing Editor

  • recruits a roster of contributing authors who are leaders in the featured professional specialty
  • works closely with the Executive Editor and the Managing Editor throughout the planning and content development phases for the issue
  • works with the Managing Editor to
    • set deadlines for developmental editing and column and article submissions
    • add columns and articles to the editorial calendar

For example, UXmatters Contributing Editors might cover the following UX specialties:

  • digital product design strategy
  • interaction design
