Milan Jovanovic on his way out of Liverpool?
Written on 29 Jul 2011 | One Comment |

A representative of Milan Jovanovic has said that the Liverpool forward will “definitely” move to Belgian club Anderlecht. Mr Jovanovic’s agent, Dejan Velkovic, says that a deal has almost been agreed, but the player’s wages could prove to be a slight stumbling block.

Anderlecht manager Herman van Holsbeeck, on Jovanovic’s reported £65,000 a week wages: “There is a gap between what we can offer and what the player (Jovanovic) gets at Liverpool.”.

So far the Serbian striker has yet to live up to expectations at Liverpool, scoring only twice in eighteen games. …

Aston Villa’s Alex McLeish, a look at his managerial career
Written on 29 Jul 2011 | One Comment |

Alex McLeish has been in football management for 17 years so he’s no stranger to a challenge. Having started at Motherwell he pulled off a surprise by guiding them to second in the SPL behind Rangers in 1994. Having over achieved that season the next two seasons Big Eck faced two scrappy relegation battles. Having seen his Motherwell side make very little progress he resigned in 1998 and became manager of Hibernian. A surprising move some might say as they too were struggling in the league and were relegated.

Harry Redknapp looking to strengthen at Tottenham
Written on 28 Jul 2011 | No Comments |

After weeks of very little activity, there looks to be some big signings around the corner for Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham Hotspur as the North London club go in search of Champions League football once more next season.
There is little doubt Redknapp needs to bolster his attacking line up if he is to keep up with the likes of Manchester City – who look set to spend big on Atletico’s Sergio Aguero – and Liverpool who have splashed out on the likes of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson in recent weeks.
So …

Copa America 2011 – International Defences On Top Again
Written on 28 Jul 2011 | No Comments |

A great deal of Copa America analysis has been dedicated to the failure of the game´s big names to impose themselves on the competition against lesser known defenders. From the opening game onwards, when Argentina failed to overcome lowly Bolivia, defences were on top in a tournament that yielded a meagre 54 goals, in comparison to Venezuela 2007´s generous offering of 86.
Argentina´s failure to negotiate the penalty shoot-out with neighbours Uruguay, in particular, has triggered the national psychosis of a nation that believed that with home advantage, and the strongest …

A Positive Problem – How will Liverpool line up this season?

Liverpool’s £50 million summer spending spree, which looks set to usurp their January transfer activity, is generally positive news for Liverpool fans. It is clear that the strategy being employed by Mr Dalglish, Commoli and Fenway Sports Group is to bring in young British talent, to build a team for the future. A cunning and necessary technique, as the rules of home-grown players look like being instated over the coming years. On top of this, Barcelona epitomise the benefits of fielding home-grown players, not only to them, but to the …

My Great Britain Olympic Team for 2012
Written on 27 Jul 2011 | No Comments |

If the idea of an Olympic football team becomes a reality here is who I think will make that team:
Joe Hart: At 24 he is a proven shot stopper and his excellent performances for city last season led to a champions league spot. Young, quick and agile he would be a major asset to the GB side.
Kyle Walker: Quick down the wings and has an attacking mentality to get forward which was showcased at Villa last season.
Gareth Bale: An excellent player who now has experience of champions league football. Very …

Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli – Foolish or Fantastic?
Written on 27 Jul 2011 | One Comment |

The whole football world has, by now, seen or heard of Mario Balotelli’s attempt to score with a complicated back-heel against LA Galaxy. Even Manchester City fans might agree that it was a strange thing to do instead of trying to score normally, and he will be the only person to know why he did it. It has earned world wide criticism about his attitude and behaviour, including from manager Roberto Mancini and several of his teammates. Mancini was clearly incensed and as soon as James Milner could warm up, and the …

Downing vs N’Zogbia who got the better deal Aston Villa or Liverpool?
Written on 26 Jul 2011 | 14 Comments |

Stewart Downing, who is 27 years old is a traditional wide man, capable of playing on both the left and right flank. In his two year spell with Aston Villa he made 75 appearances and scored eight goals. Charles N’Zogbia is 25 years old and has played principally on the left wing, making 83 appearances for Wigan and scoring fifteen.
Liverpool paid £20 million for Stewart Downing and Aston Villa are going to pay £9.5million for Charles N’Zogbia. It has bugged me for years as to why British players are so …

Championship 2011/12 Preview – West Ham to return to the top flight at first attempt?
Written on 25 Jul 2011 | 7 Comments |

The 2011/2012 Championship season will no doubt yet again be an entertaining, competitive and enthralling campaign, with a host of teams adding more players to their current armouries in an attempt to achieve promotion to the Premier League.
But which teams are destined for success, and which ones will disappoint and fall by the wayside?
1.  West Ham United
Love him or hate him, Sam Allardyce is a manager who guarantees results, and at times his drive for success leads to football that is far from aesthetically pleasing, but extremely efficient and successful. …

Copa America 2011 – Final Review
Written on 25 Jul 2011 | No Comments |

Uruguay 3-0 Paraguay
From the first whistle Uruguay looked for the opening goal, almost getting it from their first corner when a firm Lugano header was parried by the excellent Justo Villar, and the second Uruguayan goalbound effort clearly struck the hand of the Paraguayan defender Ortigosa.
Uruguay made the breakthrough when Luis Suarez neatly made spa ce for a shot and with the help of a deflection beat Villar to open the scoring. From there on in there was no looking back against a side that has reached the final with …
