ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Hermitude - Dark Night Sweet Light
[Elefant Tracks]

There isn’t an act in FBi’s history with more Albums of the Week to its name than Sydney’s own Hermitude. On their new long player, Dark Night Sweet Light, the duo prove themselves masters of pacing, creating a record rich in party vibes and downbeat introspection, moving between each with impressive ease. Filled with arpeggiating synths, glitched out vocals and festival ready beats, Hermitude’s Dark Night Sweet Light is a warm splash of summer for the colder months ahead.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer METZ - II
[Sub Po/Inertia]

If you like your music loud then II by Canada’s METZ is going to tickle you in all the right places. A steamroller of an album that hits like a thunderclap, II is a fine tuning of everything that worked so well on the band’s debut. With the combined strength of Alex Edkin’s emotionally ragged vocals and a powerhouse of a rhythm section, II by METZ pulls no punches and delivers on every count.

spacer Totally Mild - Down Time
[Bedroom Such Records]

Having grown from a series of lo-fi bedroom recordings into something much more fully formed, Totally Mild deliver their exceptional debut album, Down Time. With a uniquely Australian take on dream pop, Down Time speaks honestly to the hopes and anxieties of a twenty something year old in Australia today. With the combined strength of songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell’s gorgeous melodies and crisp, clean guitar lines, Down Time by Totally Mild is an absolute ear worm of a record and our Album of the Week on FBi.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside
[Sony Music]

Despite already possessing an impressive back catalogue, Earl Sweatshirt is an artist that sounds like he’s finally found his voice. On his new album, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, Earl pairs his trademark disaffected raps with a dark and lo-fi aesthetic, offering a compelling alternative to much of popular hip hop. A fresh and authentic sounding record from an artist unafraid to be themselves, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside by Earl Sweatshirt is our Album of the Week on FBi.

spacer Gang Of Youths - The Positions
[Sony Music]

Years in the making, Sydney’s Gang of Youths are all set to deliver their anticipated debut album, The Positions. The raw and heartbreaking story of frontman David Leaupepe’s relationship with a woman dying of cancer, The Positions is about as deeply personal as it gets. Across 10 tracks, the band unleashes years of pent up frustration, hurt, sadness and regret in a blast of cathartic indie rock, calling to mind some of the genre’s greats. An impressive debut effort, The Positions by Gang of Youths is our Album of the Week on FBi.

spacer Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
[Asthmatic Kitty/Inertia Music]

Trading grandiose electronica for stripped back, minimal acoustics, Sufjan Stevens returns with his seventh studio album, Carrie & Lowell. Inspired by the passing of his mother and the complexities of their relationship, Carrie & Lowell is a raw and bittersweet window into Stevens’ grief. A deeply personal album that ranks among his very best, Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens is our Album of the Week on FBi.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
[Universal]

Once in a while, a record comes along that points the way forward artistically, redefining expectations of what an album can achieve. In 2015, for hip-hop, that album is To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar.

Employing rap, spoken word, singing, dramatised skits and one chilling conversation with the ghost of Tupac, Kendrick pours all of himself into one of the more fully formed albums of recent memory. Creating a modern sounding take on 70’s blaxploitation soundtracks and 90’s G-funk, it’s a dramatic departure from 2012’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City that stands alone in contemporary hip-hop. Dense, challenging and ultimately rewarding if given the time, To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar is our Album of the Week on FBi.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit And Think, Sometimes I Just Sit
[Milk Records / Remote Control]

Courtney Barnett has long been an artist with an uncommon ability to turn the mundane into something a little more interesting. Whether she’s wryly recounting a panic attack or reflecting on the depressing state of modern suburbia, Courtney injects a unique sense of personality into her music that’s unmistakably her own. Her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit, sees her contuining to nail this formula. With a no frills approach to the production, each song is given the room to shine it deserves, showing off Courtney’s talent as a writer. A record that’s sure to find it’s way into the hearts of fans for a while to come, Sometimes I Just Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit by our Courtney Barnett is one we’re proud to name FBi’s Album of the Week.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Dan Deacon - Gliss Riffer
[Domino]

Our new album of the week is the latest serving of electro-pop mania from Dan Deacon, Gliss Riffer. A self described reaction to his addiction to stress and adrenaline, Gliss Riffer eschews some of Dan’s grandiose tendencies, creating a more stripped back and focused record. Hugely energetic like a good Dan Deacon record should be, Gliss Riffer is music at it’s most joyously infectious which is why it’s our Album of the Week on FBi.

Having already worked with Danny Brown, Odd Future and Frank Ocean, BADBADNOTGOOD have become a force to be reckoned with in the world of hip-hop and RnB. Now, they’re teamed up with Ghostface Killah for their outstanding collaborative album, Sour Soul. A nuanced take on hip hop with Badbad’s sample-free instrumentals, Sour Soul finds it’s mark when Ghostface lets loose, bringing his own brand of east coast storytelling over each track. Without a doubt one of the best Wu-Tang affiliated albums for some time, BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface Killah’s Sour Soul is an album we’re proud to name our Album of the Week on FBi.

[Captured Tracks]

Collectively all aged under 20, Mourn bring a touch of maturity to their music that belies their youth. Calling to mind early PJ Harvey and Sleater Kinney, the album is a wall to wall blast of raw, cathartic punk.

A promising debut from a band you’d do well to keep an eye on, Mourn’s delt titled debut is our Album of the Week on FBi.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
[Sub Pop / Inertia]

Since releasing his first record as Father John Misty, it’s pretty safe to say that Josh Tillman fell in love with a lady. His new album, I Love You Honeybear, is an honest, raw and overwhelmingly romantic affair, kept grounded by Tillman’s knack for tongue-in-cheek cynicism. Dryly poking fun at the commercial institution of love, his mockery keeps the record feeling refreshingly real. An outstanding follow up effort, I Love You Honeybear by Father John Misty is our Album of the Week on FBi.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

spacer Bjork - Vulnicura
[One Little Indian / POD]

There are few artists in the world as universally loved and respected as Bjork. Her new album, Vulnicura is an album of heartache, taking the form of a diary detailing the course of a devastating break up. With collaborators including Arca and Haxan Cloak bringing a bleak, forward thinking touch to the production, Bjork has created the perfect picture of a broken heart. Arguably her strongest work since 2001’s Vespertine, Bjork’s Vulnicura is our Album of the Week on FBi.
