Centre of Research in English (CoRE)

spacer

The Centre of Research in English (CoRE) was established in 2009 as part of the Faculty’s new Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences Research (IHSSR). Its immediate predecessor was the English Research Institute (ERI), founded in November 2003.

CoRE brings together over 50 staff and research students from the Department of English at the Manchester All Saints Campus and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at MMU Cheshire.

In RAE 2008 the English subject group at MMU managed to improve from a Grade 4 in RAE 2001 to an average current star rating of 2.35. 15% of our research was identified as world-leading in quality, while an additional 20% was found to be internationally excellent. Half of our remaining work was considered to be of an internationally recognised quality, while 15% was graded as nationally recognised. Particular evidence of world-leading research was found in the area of Creative Writing at the Manchester Writing School at MMU.

Taking into account its critical mass (31 research-active staff contributed to RAE 2008, adding up to a weighting of almost 27 FTE), CORE is now the strongest new-university English Studies research group in the country. It ranks 30th in the national league table, which lists a total of 87 departments and research centres. The international esteem factors of our staff were graded as internationally excellent, while the Centre’s overall research culture was awarded a 2* internationally recognised rating.

The Centre has an impressive publication record, including not only critical studies but also novels, plays and poetry. We have a vibrant, rapidly-expanding postgraduate student culture, which is fully integrated in the Centre’s research environment.
