Wheeling through Brooklyn's Past with David V. Herlihy

In celebration of National Bike Month, join the author of Bicycle: The History and The Lost Cyclist for a look back at Brooklyn’s rich and colorful legacy of cycling clubs and culture. From the "South Brooklyn Wheelmen” to the "Whirling Dervishes," Brooklyn has long been a hotbed of cycling. Learn all about it and make your head spin! Offered in partnership with the New York Cycle Club.




Free Weekend Tours: This is Brooklyn
Join us to learn about the history of Brooklyn and experience one of New York's great landmark buildings! On select Sundays at 1pm, enjoy a 1 hour introductory tour of Brooklyn's history in our beautiful building. FREE with museum admission, this tour is perfect for a first time Brooklyn visitor as well as the seasoned Brooklynite who could use a quick history refresher!

Photo of the Week

The photo of the week is a dry plate glass negative from the William Koch glass negatives collection, which includes 66 photographs from about 1890 to right around 1925. William “Billy” Koch was an amateur photographer in Brooklyn and owned a tavern named Billy Cook’s Saloon in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn. His photographs display houses, farms, and street scenes, as well as informal portraits of groups and individuals outdoors. This photograph is particularly charming because it feels very candid, like a peek into the life of a young girl in the early 20th century. Public transportation is recommended due to limited parking.

BHS regularly welcomes groups from Big Onion Walking Tours to our building. Big Onion Walking Tours has offered innovative and exciting walks in NYC's historic districts and ethnic neighborhoods since 1991. All guides hold advanced degrees in American History, Art History, or a related field, and they are often researching and writing theses on topics relevant to their tours.
