When you are a person that always needs to do something creative, and on top of that are a professional painter, photographer, graphic and web designer, you are on a daily basis dealing with thoughts and attempts to create something new and different. However, what you mostly ‘produce’ is bunch of unconnected work that don’t co-exist, which are completely independent. In order to create a magazine, different from what you can find on the market, besides clear vision and creativity you must also posses ambition, be very organized and structured but also a bit crazy, especially if you are working on a non-profitable project. On the other side, creating a photography e-magazine without the burden of high financial costs, such as printing and distribution fees, means freedom and guarantees satisfaction as you can entirely devote yourself to authors and their artistic work. It was this unbelievable feeling of freedom that gave me inspiration and impulse to create a magazine that I would like to see on the market and immediately buy it. After 2 years working on Bulb magazine, I could feel how satisfaction grew with every new issue. But it is now, after first BLUR issue, when I can say that I believe I am on a good track, as it is always the most difficult to primarily satisfy myself.

Areas of interest: everything, really. How could you choose? If I must, I’d single out photography, music, ethics, robotics, science & general technological advances, hi-tech gadgetry, green technologies and pretty much anything related to the modern fast-paced, hi-tech lifestyle and business.

Superpower: skill collection. If it can be done, I most probably want to know how.

My interest in photography dates from my teenage years, at the beginning of 1980s. In these thirty years as an amateur photographer, I have come a long way from an absolute beginner to a photographic connoisseur: I have used all kinds of cameras and photographed all kinds of scenes.

By profession I’m a teacher of English and Sociology, and for the last twenty years I’ve been a professional translator. But, photography has always been a part of my life: sometimes more, and sometimes less – but for the last thirty years, a camera is always with me. As the technology of photography progresses into digital age, I am going the opposite way: I started out with 35mm cameras, then switched to medium format cameras, and ended up with large format cameras. Soon I’ll probably try my hand in photography using dry (or perhaps even wet) plates. In fact, I guess I am also somewhat of an anachronism, since my preferred photographic storage medium is still film.

I am still fascinated by everything related to photography: from its technical aspects and the mechanical precision of old analog cameras, to aesthetics and history of photography.

Born in Brazil, Maurício has been involved with photography since taking his very first lessons in high-school in his native hometown of São Paulo. He has lived in London for over ten years where he developed a passion for a more lo-fi approach to photography by using a variety of toy-cameras, pinholes and old cameras mainly found on flea markets.

I love shooting on film and I believe nothing can substitute for the feeling of loading a camera and carefully composing each frame… it’s the “hands on” process that really excites me in photography.

Michael Kirchoff

Michael has spent his years capturing the still image of people, cultures, and landscapes from around the world, to around the block, with a very unique and distinctive style. A native Californian, Michael resides in Los Angeles, though equally at home trudging through Redwood forests, riding the rails deep into Siberia, or navigating the chaotic streets of Tokyo. He photographs with many types of cameras and film, from a clunky toy camera to the latest digital model, using each as a tool for a specific use.

Michael’s fine art imagery has garnered recognition from the International Photography Awards, the Prix de la Photographie in Paris, Photographers Forum, and Critical Mass. He has been published in Black & White, PH, Square, Seities, Adore Noir, Fraction, and Diffusion Annual, as well as high profile photography blogs such as Lenscratch and Light Leaked, and continues to exhibit his prints internationally.

The wisest words Michael ever gleaned from his father were to do what you love as your life’s work. Truer words have never been spoken.
