RUD Students Hear Music in Home, Compete in Chicago

Posted on March 13, 2013

Racquet Up Detroit likes to stay busy.

On Saturday, February 16, students visited a nearby home in Palmer Woods. As part of the neighborhood’s Music in Homes series, students listened to jazz music from renowned musicians. Students asked and answered questions posed by the performers and other attendees. It is the second year in a row that our students have had the opportunity to attend a Palmer Woods concert.

Over the weekend March 8 – March 10, a group of 12 Racquet Up students traveled to Chicago to compete in the METROsquash Bronze Junior Open.  With over 90 players from around the Midwest, including urban squash students from our sister programs METROsquash and Urban Squash Cleveland, our students had great competition and lots of matches. Some students played as many as 5 matches, including Quran, who reached the semifinals of the boys U15 Consolation Draw.

A big congratulations goes to Starnisha. She won three consecutive matches to reach the finals of the girls U13 Main Draw. Playing against a tough opponent, she lost her final match 3-1, but left Chicago with her second squash trophy.

In addition to squash, students visited the Art Institute of Chicago, delved into shakes at Dairy Queen, and made friends with other players from around the Midwest. Thanks to our hosts at the University Club of Chicago and the University Church.
